What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Morro do Careca is a visually striking landmark on Natal's Ponta Negra Beach, offering iconic views and a lively atmosphere. While the beach nourishment project has altered the sand and sea conditions, making swimming more challenging, visitors can still enjoy walks, dolphin tours, and the vibrant beach scene. Finding quieter spots away from the main crowds is recommended for a more peaceful experience.
"Natal's showcase! When someone says Natal, RN you immediately see Morro to Careca in your mind. A beautiful sand dune seen from the entire length of the beach. TOP SPOT!
Lots of activities all around, including trips to wild beaches!"
European Gringo
"I downgraded from five to three stars since something terrible occurred: the beach suffered a process of fattening by a Dutch company. This consisted of removing sand from the bottom of the sea at some 500 to 700 meters and dumping it to the beach, pushing the beach away by approximately 100 meters.
Can it get worse? YES! The new sand contains calcareous residues of marine life that hurts one's feet. Or worse, if you try to rest horizontally.
Only experts can swim, now, since where you can jump into the water the sea is deep and waves are high.
The picture illustrates a sample of smaller shells and calcified algae that populate the beach now."

"Average beach...Ok for a walk and some photos, but not the greatest beach by far."

Understanding Morro do Careca's Evolution
The consequences of this 'fattening' process have been mixed. While the beach is now wider, the new sand contains calcareous residues from marine life, which can be uncomfortable and even painful underfoot. Furthermore, the altered seabed and sand composition have led to deeper waters and higher waves near the shore, making swimming more challenging and potentially hazardous for inexperienced swimmers.
Despite these changes, Morro do Careca remains a powerful symbol of Natal. Visitors can still appreciate its grandeur from the beach, and it continues to be a central element in the city's postcard imagery. The surrounding Ponta Negra beach offers a lively atmosphere with various activities, though visitors seeking tranquility might prefer the less crowded sections of the shore.
Navigating Ponta Negra Beach
For those looking for a more relaxed experience, heading towards the extremities of Ponta Negra Beach, away from the main access points, is advised. These areas tend to be less congested and offer a more peaceful environment to enjoy the sun and sea. Even with the bustling atmosphere, the water is generally considered clean for a city beach, and a sense of safety is often reported by visitors.
Beyond simply relaxing, Ponta Negra Beach is a starting point for various excursions. Dolphin watching tours are a popular choice, offering a chance to see marine life in its natural habitat. The beach itself is ideal for leisurely walks, especially during the late afternoon when the light is softer and the crowds may begin to thin.
