What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise MEPE for its fantastic collection covering Pernambuco's history, from pre-Columbian times to the 19th century, and its beautiful 1800s building. However, many note that exhibit labels are poorly developed and lack detailed information, which can detract from the learning experience. The lack of a cafe and limited language options (no Spanish) are also mentioned as drawbacks.
"Fantastic collection about the history of Pernambuco! Very poorly labeled, however. The main collection (in the newer building) has many pre-Columbian artifacts, Dutch-era paintings, etc. The aristocratic mansion houses many 19th century imported luxury goods from Europe and Asia, plus one gallery of Brazilian religious art.
Highlights are an 18th century painted dowry chest, three large-scale paintings of Portugese-Dutch conflict (ex-votos), and several Belle Époque paintings of Recife.
Free. Lockers available to deposit small bags."

"Good but way too small. The historic part is under-developed. You see some artifacts of the indian population - but the information plaques don't even tell whether this culture is paleolithic, or neolithic. Just "some artifacts". And this is just ONE room, ~30 sq.m. Then, there's colonization history - and it's just isolated artifacts of the highest nobility. For example, a gigantic cradle. It's valuable, but how on earth does it represent the history of the region? Out of nowhere you see some old plaque of indians cultural club. But you only have to guess what it means. (Looks like early-mid XX.) Again, as with the city museum, if you don't have original materials, do reconstructions of rooms, of working table, etc. But no, nothing. The noble house is -- again, great that it's there, and preserved, but not representative of history."

"The museum is very beautiful for itself and has a good space, but it lacks a coffee shop inside, so, since you can't drink water from the sink in Brazil, bring a bottle or you will be thirsty. The bathroom is ok, nothing sophisticated, but clean when I used it. The staff inside is friendly, but the doorman was rude. The texts has English translations, but no Spanish, what is a shame, since we are surrounded by Spanish speakers."

This means that for a truly in-depth understanding, visitors might benefit from prior research or seeking out additional information from museum staff. The building itself, a grand 1800s structure, is also a significant part of the experience, offering a glimpse into historical architecture.
Despite the occasional lack of detailed labeling, MEPE remains a valuable destination for understanding Pernambuco's multifaceted history. While the bathrooms are functional and generally clean, they are not described as sophisticated. Visitor experiences with staff can vary, with some noting friendly interactions and others encountering a rude doorman.
