What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Praia da Ponta Negra offers a vibrant river beach experience with stunning sunset views and convenient amenities. While some visitors find the beach dirty and prices high, others appreciate the lively atmosphere and the unique dark waters of the Rio Negro. It's a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, especially in the evenings.
"Great Beach with concessions and sanitarios. Food service was good. My only issue was the number of beggers along the beach. The water had a large amount of tannin in it and was heavily discolored from the organics. The sand did go out a long ways and the water temperature in September was really nice. At night you can see the Rio Negro Bridge all lit up."

"It’s the only beach of the city so I understand why locals go there, but the beach is really not a nice place. Extremely dirt with a bad smell of trash, prices are crazy: 15 réais a coconut and 20 reais for using broken table and chairs on the beach. Don’t go there, save your time!"
Stefano Balla
"Though it is technically the bank of a river, the atmosphere and other aspects are exact to that as a beach. Clean sand, many stalls available that sell food and drinks. Water is dark but good quality."

The Unique Waters of Ponta Negra
While the water quality is good, the beach itself can sometimes be perceived as dirty by some visitors, with reports of trash and a strong smell. This is often attributed to the high volume of visitors and the challenges of maintaining cleanliness in such a popular public space. The dark color of the water can also make it harder to see the bottom, so swimmers should exercise caution.
Navigating the Beachfront Economy
Beyond food and drink vendors, the beach is also frequented by persistent sellers and beggars. While this is common in many popular tourist spots, it can be overwhelming for some. A polite but firm 'no, thank you' is usually sufficient to deter them. Despite these aspects, many visitors appreciate the convenience of having food and services readily available right on the beach, especially during sunset when the atmosphere is particularly lively.
