"Quite an amazing place! Very chill atmosphere and a nice welcome hearing about the history of the place in a rustic hut having a little hut with the fellow who lived the story of the discovery of the place. The wall paintings are impressive, numerous and there was nice description in Português about the symbology. Despite being Carnaval weekend there were few people. Another guide helped with some English translation for our group. A hidden gem!"

🚇 🗺️ Getting There
The most common gateways are São Luís (SLZ airport). From there, you'll typically take a van or bus to Barreirinhas (about 4 hours), which is the main base for tours. Other access points include Santo Amaro and Atins. Access into the park itself usually requires a 4x4 vehicle, often arranged through tour operators.
Exploring the park is best done with guided tours, as navigating the sandy terrain can be challenging. Many visitors opt for 4x4 tours to popular spots like Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita. For a more immersive experience, consider multi-day treks.
While you can reach the gateway towns independently, exploring the park's interior is highly recommended with a guide. The vastness and shifting sands make independent navigation difficult and potentially unsafe.
Barreirinhas is the most developed town with the most infrastructure and tour options. Santo Amaro offers a more remote and authentic experience, while Atins is known for its laid-back vibe and proximity to the coast.
Yes, the sandy terrain requires 4x4 vehicles. Most tours and transfers into the park utilize these specialized vehicles.

It is highly recommended to book tours in advance, especially during peak season (July-September), to ensure availability and get the best options.
🎫 🧭 Onsite Experience
Light, breathable clothing is essential. Bring swimwear for the lagoons, a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Comfortable sandals or water shoes are ideal for walking on sand and in water.
Besides swimming in the lagoons and exploring the dunes, you can enjoy breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, go sandboarding, take scenic flights for a panoramic view, or embark on multi-day treks.
The lagoons are generally safe for swimming, with clear, fresh water. Always follow your guide's advice and be aware of your surroundings.
Absolutely! The landscape is incredibly photogenic. Golden hour (sunrise and sunset) offers the most dramatic lighting for stunning photos.
While the dunes are primarily known for their landscape, you might spot some bird species and small reptiles. The surrounding areas have richer biodiversity.
🍽️ 🍽️ Food & Dining
In gateway towns like Barreirinhas, you'll find a variety of restaurants serving local cuisine, including fresh seafood and regional dishes. Some tours include meals, especially multi-day treks.
Options can be limited, especially in more remote areas. It's best to communicate your dietary needs in advance with your tour operator or accommodation.
Generally, there are no formal restaurants inside the park. It's advisable to pack snacks and water, or ensure your tour includes provisions.
Try regional specialties like 'arroz de cuxá' (rice with a herb paste), grilled fish, and 'carne de sol' (sun-dried beef).
Prices can vary. Gateway towns offer a range of options from budget-friendly to more upscale. Eating in more remote oases during treks might be simpler but part of the experience.
📸 📸 Photography
The golden hours around sunrise and sunset offer the most spectacular light for capturing the dunes and lagoons. Midday sun can be harsh, but still creates dramatic shadows.
A wide-angle lens is great for capturing the vast landscapes. Consider a polarizing filter to enhance the blue of the lagoons and the white of the sand. A sturdy tripod can be useful for low-light conditions.
Use a protective camera bag and consider a lens hood. Avoid changing lenses in windy conditions. A small brush or blower can help remove sand.
Lagoa Bonita and Lagoa Azul are classic spots. The vastness of the dunes offers endless compositions. Drone photography can capture incredible aerial views, but check park regulations.
People love photos of the sweeping dunes, the contrast between sand and water, people swimming in lagoons, and dramatic sunset/sunrise shots.
For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Consider booking accommodations with family-friendly amenities. While multi-day treks might be challenging for very young children, shorter excursions and boat trips on the Preguiças River offer enjoyable alternatives. Many tour operators can tailor experiences for families, ensuring a comfortable and memorable adventure.
💰 Budget Travelers
Look for group tours rather than private ones, as they significantly reduce the per-person cost for 4x4 excursions. Packing your own snacks and water can also help cut down on daily expenses. While multi-day treks can be more expensive, they offer an all-inclusive experience that can be cost-effective if planned well.
❤️ Couples and Honeymooners
Many pousadas (guesthouses) in towns like Atins offer charming and comfortable stays, perfect for couples. The otherworldly landscapes provide a stunning backdrop for unforgettable photos and memories.

The Magic of the Seasonal Lagoons
Visitors often describe the experience of swimming in these freshwater lagoons amidst the endless white sand as surreal and otherworldly. The contrast between the stark white dunes and the vibrant blue or green water is visually stunning. It's a unique phenomenon found nowhere else on such a grand scale, making it a UNESCO World Heritage site. Remember to bring swimwear and a towel, as you'll undoubtedly want to take a dip to cool off from the tropical sun.
When planning your visit, consult local guides or tourism websites for the most up-to-date information on lagoon water levels. While the peak season is generally reliable, local conditions can vary slightly year to year. The sheer scale of the park means that even during peak times, you can often find quieter spots away from the main tour routes.
Navigating the Dunes: Tours and Treks
For those seeking a deeper connection with the park, multi-day treks are an incredible option. These treks, often lasting 3 to 5 days, allow you to hike through the dunes, sleep in rustic oases (villages inhabited by local communities), and experience the park's tranquility away from the day-trippers. Meals are usually included, and accommodation is typically in hammocks or simple beds. This immersive experience offers a chance to truly disconnect and appreciate the raw beauty of the environment.
When choosing a tour or trek, consider your fitness level and desired experience. Day tours are more accessible, while treks require a good level of physical fitness. Booking with reputable local agencies is crucial for safety and a well-organized trip. Many agencies offer various packages, from adventurous expeditions to more relaxed explorations.
