Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Sete Cidades National Park for its breathtaking natural beauty, particularly the iconic twin lakes and panoramic viewpoints. The opportunity for hiking and exploring the volcanic caldera is a major draw. Some travelers noted potential confusion or unexpected costs regarding mandatory guide services in certain areas, and unpredictable weather can sometimes obscure the views.

"This is truly an amazing place!
It’s definitely worth the trip. The guides may charge a small fee … they are worth it. You get someone to explain everything to you and protect you from the local wildlife 👍!"

Matt G

"I arrived at the entrance of the park where I signed a liability waver, meaning I'd go inside the park on my own risk. Some 3 km further on was a group of guides charging 150 R$ to go any further. Alleging that a guide is obligatory. Strange. And they couldn't show me anything to prove that one really had to contract an ridiculously expensive guide, like a park rule issued by the park itself (not by the guides). Even if a guide would be mandatory, the question is why. The environment does not justify an extreme measure like that. I wasted an expensive taxi ride because I wouldn't give my hard earned money to unnecessary services."

"I love it! Beautiful, amazing place!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Legend of the Blue and Green Lakes

The iconic twin lakes of Sete Cidades, one appearing blue and the other green, are steeped in local legend. The most popular tale speaks of a princess and a shepherd whose forbidden love led to their tears forming the lakes. The princess's blue eyes are said to have formed the Lagoa Azul (Blue Lake), while the shepherd's green eyes formed the Lagoa Verde (Green Lake). This romantic folklore adds a layer of mystique to the already stunning natural beauty of the caldera. Instagram

While the legend is captivating, the scientific explanation for the color difference lies in the depth and reflection of light. Lagoa Azul is shallower and reflects the sky more directly, appearing blue. Lagoa Verde is deeper and surrounded by lush vegetation, which reflects into the water, giving it a greenish hue. Regardless of the reason, the visual contrast is striking and a major draw for visitors. Instagram

Many visitors seek out the best vantage points to capture this unique phenomenon. The viewpoints offer not just a glimpse of the lakes but also a sense of the immense volcanic forces that shaped this landscape over millennia. Instagram

Hiking and Exploring the Caldera

Sete Cidades National Park is a hiker's paradise, offering a variety of trails for all fitness levels. The most famous is the hike along the crater rim, which provides unparalleled panoramic views of the twin lakes and the surrounding volcanic landscape. Trails like the one from Mata do Canário to Sete Cidades are well-marked and offer a rewarding experience. Instagram

When planning your hike, always check the weather forecast, as conditions can change rapidly in the Azores. Sturdy hiking boots are recommended, and carrying water and snacks is essential, especially for longer treks. Some trails might be muddy after rain, so waterproof gear is a good idea. Instagram

Beyond the rim trails, you can also explore paths that lead down to the lake shores or through the charming village of Sete Cidades. These offer a different perspective and a chance to immerse yourself in the tranquility of the caldera. Remember to respect the natural environment and stay on marked paths to preserve the park's beauty. Instagram

The Eerie Allure of Monte Palace Hotel

The abandoned Monte Palace Hotel, perched on the edge of the Sete Cidades caldera, is a hauntingly beautiful relic of a bygone era. Opened in 1989 as a luxury hotel, it closed its doors within two years, leaving behind a grand structure reclaimed by nature. Today, its empty halls, covered in graffiti and overgrown with vegetation, offer a stark contrast to the breathtaking views it once promised. Instagram

Visiting the ruins provides a unique and somewhat eerie experience. It's a popular spot for photographers and urban explorers, drawn to its atmospheric decay and the dramatic backdrop of the volcanic landscape. While access is generally permitted, visitors are advised to proceed with caution due to the building's unstable condition. Instagram

The story of the Monte Palace Hotel serves as a poignant reminder of ambitious ventures and the power of nature to reclaim its space. It adds an unexpected, intriguing dimension to a visit to Sete Cidades, offering a different kind of beauty beyond the natural splendor of the lakes. Instagram
