What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Friendship Bridge is a functional, albeit sometimes slow, crossing over the Danube, connecting Bulgaria and Romania. While the views are appreciated, recent construction has led to significant delays and traffic jams, particularly when heading into Bulgaria. Travelers note the straightforward border control but advise preparedness for potential long waits and manual toll payments.
"A convenient and important crossing between Bulgaria and Romania. The bridge is old but functional, and the view over the Danube is quite beautiful while driving across. Border control is straightforward, though queues can appear during weekends and busy hours. The toll payment is simple, and the connection to Bucharest is fast once you enter Romania.
Overall, a practical and efficient route, especially for travelers heading to the Romanian capital."

"The Danube Bridge, also known as the Bridge of Friendship, is not just an engineering structure but a vital link between Bulgaria (Ruse) and Romania (Giurgiu). Crossing it offers a unique experience, highlighting the beauty and grandeur of the Danube River."
Georgi Genov
"In case anyone is wondering: Yes, you can just walk over this bridge as a pedestrian!
Because of the current construction works, which lead to hour-long traffic jams, this might even be faster than driving. And it's free.
However, the bridge is not made for pedestrians. The sidewalks on the bridge are narrow. Before and after the bridge there are none, you just walk an the side of the road. I hope this gets improved in the future, especially now with both countries being in the Schengen zone.
But anyways, it's a pretty adventurous walk with very nice views. I would recommend."

Navigating the Crossing
Travelers often report a straightforward border control process, but the primary challenge can be the wait times. Recent construction has exacerbated these delays, leading to queues that can stretch for hours, even at night. The single-lane passage due to repairs and a manual toll system contribute to the inefficiency. It's highly recommended to check for any ongoing construction or traffic advisories before your journey to plan accordingly and potentially avoid lengthy delays.
For those looking for a more unique experience, walking across the bridge is an option. While it offers adventurous appeal and impressive views of the Danube, it's important to note that the pedestrian sidewalks are narrow and can be hazardous, especially as they lack dedicated paths before and after the bridge. This makes it less ideal for families or those with mobility concerns, but for the intrepid traveler, it's a memorable way to experience the crossing.
Understanding Tolls and Vignettes
It's advisable to have cash on hand, preferably in Bulgarian Leva, Romanian Leu, or Euros, as card payment facilities may not always be available or reliable. Beyond the bridge toll, ensure you have the necessary road tax stickers (vignettes) for both countries. These can usually be purchased electronically online before your trip or at border crossings and fuel stations. Failing to have the correct vignette can result in fines.
