Burial with skeleton and gold. The Varna Necropolis was discovered during construction in 1972 and has over 300 graves. The site is renowned for containing the oldest known gold objects and jewelry, dating back to the Copper Age (4600-4200 BCE) Varna Archaeological Museum, Bulgaria [2560x1706]
The final resting place of a prosperous chief, who died in his 40s, was recreated exactly as archeologists found it, using field pictures, plans, and diary descriptions. Though the skeleton is a plastic replica, it is surrounded and adorned by remnants of the chief’s original…
The discovery of the Varna Chalcolithic Necropolis revealed proofs of the oldest European civilization and the world's oldest gold. In significance the sensational discovery rivals Heinrich Schliemann's discovery of Troy. [1024x769]
Huh, never heard of that. Interesting. [Wikipedia article](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varna_Necropolis). Notable (because I'm still 12 I guess?): >*The high status male buried with the most remarkable amount of gold held a war adze or mace and wore a gold penis…

[Here](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varna_Necropolis#/media/File:Or_de_Varna_-_N%C3%A9cropole.jpg) is a more realistic picture (don't know if this is the real thing or another replica) It is actually older 4,600 BC to 4,200 BC and not 4,000 BC, from…

"Fabulous! The best was the lovely lady who told me the history of Bulgaria in great detail but so I could understand it. Over three levels in a historic building. I thoroughly enjoyed the videos, the first was a master shoemaker making shoes and boots, the second was a felt hat being made."
Merinda Hewat-Cameron
"Little museum about the history of Varna between 1978 to WW2. The top floor was like a collection of different shops from that period. But the amazing lady who does the introduction is the best part of the museum. She was great! Thank you so much!"
Sebastian Paz
"What a gem of a museum! Even taking your time, it’s about an hour, but well worth making the effort to learn about this important period of Bulgarian history.
For English/Russian speakers, Stefka - an amazingly knowledgeable and passionate guide - comes out to talk with you about the time period, then you walk through on your own, but can ask any questions. (There are also printed guides in various languages, but she makes it so interesting!) I learned so much about Bulgarian/Varna history - this is a perfect companion with the Archaeological Museum.
It’s very close to both the larger and smaller Roman baths, which can be very hot - this museum is air conditioned!!! Highly recommend! Thank you for sharing your passion and knowledge about Bulgaria! (Very easy to just walk in for the 5 Lev ticket.)"
