Reviews Summary

Visitors are impressed by the monumental scale and historical significance of the Roman Thermae, recognizing it as a major feat of Roman engineering and the largest of its kind in the Balkans. However, many feel the experience could be significantly enhanced with more informative signage and better supervision to protect the vulnerable ruins.

"A good example how even the greatest empire are falling down, it’s sad to look at these monumental ruins having in mind that the facility was used within a very small period of time (less than 80 years). Despite of that, the spirit of the great empire comes alive when you are among these 2000 years old huge stones….the building is huge, 7000 sq meters and proves how great the Roman Empire was at these times…."

Desislav Todorov

"It was my first time visiting a Roman bath, and I was amazed by its size and the impressive height of the ruins - estimated to be around 20 to 22 meters. There seemed to be no time limit for staying inside.

Reason for 4 Star:

Only one staff member was present, who sold me the ticket and was polite but neutral.

Modern stairs have been added to ease access and protect the site. However, most areas are open to the public with little restriction, making them vulnerable to damage or vandalism. I believe better supervision is needed.

More informative signs, photos, and explanations would greatly enhance the experience.
A monitor showing animated reconstructions and historical details could also be a great addition.

The site looked especially beautiful at night."

Reza Nazari

"Fascinating to walk through these roman baths. A major drawback is very little information for self-guided visits other than a few illustrations and maps."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Grandeur of Roman Engineering

The Roman Thermae of Varna, known as Odessus in antiquity, are a remarkable testament to Roman engineering and urban planning. Constructed in the late 2nd century AD, these baths were not just a place for hygiene but also a social and cultural hub. Their immense size, covering approximately 7,000 square meters, and the impressive height of the remaining vaults (up to 20-22 meters) highlight the advanced architectural techniques of the Roman Empire. Instagram+1

These thermae were the fourth-largest preserved Roman baths in Europe and the largest on the Balkan Peninsula, underscoring Varna's (Odessus') importance during the Roman era. The complex would have included various rooms such as the frigidarium (cold room), tepidarium (warm room), and caldarium (hot room), along with exercise areas and possibly libraries. The sheer scale of the construction speaks volumes about the wealth and power of the Roman Empire at its height. TikTok

Despite their monumental nature, historical records suggest the baths were in use for a relatively short period, less than 80 years, before falling into disuse. This makes their preservation even more significant. Today, visitors can walk through these vast ruins, imagining the daily life and social interactions that once took place within these ancient walls. Reddit

Visitor Experience and Preservation

Visiting the Roman Thermae offers a unique glimpse into the past, but the visitor experience can be enhanced with more information. While the sheer scale of the ruins is awe-inspiring, many visitors note a lack of detailed signage, historical context, or explanatory materials. This can make it challenging for self-guided tours to fully grasp the significance of the site. Reddit

To improve the experience, suggestions include adding more informative signs, historical photos, and perhaps even an animated monitor showcasing reconstructions of the baths. Modern additions like stairs have been implemented to improve access and protect the site, but the open nature of many areas raises concerns about preservation and potential vandalism. Reddit Visitors are encouraged to do their own research beforehand or consider hiring a local guide to get the most out of their visit. The site is particularly noted for its beauty when illuminated at night, offering a different perspective on its grandeur. Reddit
