"🏰 Brief History
Tsarevets Fortress, located on Tsarevets Hill above the city of Veliko Tarnovo (once capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire), was the main Bulgarian stronghold from 1185 to 1393, housing the royal and patriarchal palaces . Archaeological findings show human activity on the hill dating back to the Late Chalcolithic (~4200 BC) through Thracian, Byzantine, and medieval Bulgarian periods.
After the uprising of Asen and Peter in 1185, the fortress became the political and spiritual center of the restored Bulgarian state. It resisted Ottoman siege for three months before falling on 17 July 1393, signalling the end of the Second Empire.
The fortress was extensively restored from the 1930s and officially completed in 1981 for the 1300th anniversary of the Bulgarian state . Its key features include thick defensive walls, Baldwin’s Tower, Execution Rock, the royal palace complex, and the reconstructed Patriarchal Cathedral of the Ascension, painted in modernist frescoes in 1985

🌍 Why it matters
Tsarevets is not only an architectural marvel but a symbol of Bulgaria’s medieval glory — from ancient settlements to its zenith in the Second Empire, ending with its dramatic fall in 1393. Its reconstruction and immersive evening shows help bring that rich history to life."
Ina Mateescu
"The fortress is amazing for a walk around and explore what ancient times seemed like and felt like. It’s a bit pricey for the place itself. The ticket is 10 leva for a walk.
The walk is kid friendly and not to hard to make however in order to see some places there are many steeps and uphill which can be a bit difficult.
I recommend to go in the morning so there’s no line for the tickets and it has less tourists."
