The bridge on the way to the Victory Gate outside Angkor Thom has a name: Span Thma. It was most probably built to connect Angkor Thom to the East Baray. In the 12th century the Siem Reap River flowed through here. It still does, though at a much lower height and much further away. The bridge was supported on a series of corbell arches, which because of its inability to have a wide span, has a ser...

Located on the side of the road leading to Angkor Thom's Victory Gate is a curious pile of stones which no one stops to explore. The area is not marked by any information board either. This is remarkably the ruins of a bridge which once passed over the Siem Reap River. Over centuries the river changed its course significantly, hence the bridge fell into disuse.

Reviews Summary

Spean Thma is appreciated for its historical significance as an ancient bridge and its unique corbel arch construction. Visitors enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and the opportunity to see nature reclaiming the ruins, though some find it less of a 'must-see' compared to the major temples.

"Remains of an old bridge from a time when the water level and the watercourse was in a very different location, shows how corbelling was used instead of a keystone to lock the two sides of an arch, as in all early stone construction. i think it should continue to be preserved, since it being at eye-level it can be inspected by anybody who cares to look."

Greg Ochylski

"Spean Thmor is a 17th-century sandstone bridge in Angkor Archaeological Park, west of Ta Keo. Built on the old Siem Reap River route, it reuses carved blocks from earlier Bayon-era temples (12th–13th century)."

Lim Roma

"This is out of the circuit, very very enjoyable though. After the temple, keep walking so you can go to the water mill and the tree nursery. We were able to see farmers work on the trees and other growing plants.

There are also ruins of an old bridge along which they have built a newer one. Trees have grown on it.

For the trip back to the temple, you can either go back the same path or walk along the road, after a short climb back it."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Engineering Marvel of Spean Thma

Spean Thma is a remarkable example of Khmer bridge construction, dating back to the 15th century. Unlike modern bridges that rely on keystones, this ancient structure utilizes corbel arches. This technique involves progressively overlapping stones, each extending slightly further than the one below, until they meet in the middle to form an arch. This method allowed for the construction of sturdy bridges without the need for precise keystone cutting, showcasing the ingenuity of the era's engineers. TikTok

The bridge was originally built to span the Siem Reap River, which has since changed its course and diminished in size. The remnants of Spean Thma stand as a testament to its former grandeur and the dynamic nature of the landscape over centuries. The reuse of carved blocks from earlier Bayon-era temples also highlights the resourcefulness of the Khmer builders. Reddit

Observing the bridge up close, you can appreciate the detailed stonework and the way nature has begun to reclaim parts of the structure, with trees growing from the ancient stones. This integration of man-made and natural elements adds to its unique appeal and historical significance. Instagram

Spean Thma's Place in the Angkorian Landscape

Spean Thma is strategically located within the vast Angkor Archaeological Park, often found on the route to Angkor Thom's Victory Gate. Its original purpose was to facilitate travel and connect important areas, likely linking Angkor Thom to the East Baray. The presence of such bridges underscores the sophisticated infrastructure developed by the Khmer Empire to manage water resources and facilitate movement across their expansive territory. TikTok

While not as grand as the temples, Spean Thma offers a different perspective on Khmer civilization – one focused on practical engineering and daily life. It's a reminder that the empire was not just about monumental religious structures but also about the systems that supported its population and economy. Instagram

Many visitors find Spean Thma to be a peaceful and less crowded alternative to the main temple sites. It provides an opportunity to reflect on the history of the region and appreciate the enduring legacy of Khmer architecture in a more serene setting. Reddit
