What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Carbide Willson Ruins as a 'hidden gem' and a 'worthwhile' short hike. The combination of accessible trails, historical ruins, and a beautiful waterfall creates a unique and peaceful experience. While some find the 'too well-maintained' trail less rugged, most agree it's a great option for a few hours of exploration, suitable for all ages and offering excellent photo opportunities.
"Location: although Gatineau Park does not have effective road signs, Google Maps has saved me several times in this maze of a park. Fortunately the trails themselves have good maps and route markers. Using GPS and following the trails markers, it was easy to navigate everywhere and find the ruins.
Parking: there is plenty of parking as this is a popular trail. The price is varied depending on how much time you need, but it will likely cost you between $11-15.
Facilities: there are toilets at the entrance to the trail and everything is in good condition and well maintained.
Aesthetics/ambience: some of the trail feels almost “too well maintained” as it feels more like a road than a hiking trail and I was concerned there might be vehicles passing by us, but I think it’s just a service road for park staff only. There are lots of trees and a beautiful stream, and we saw plenty of wildlife. The ruins of the dam, mill, and laboratory are really cool and are definitely the main attraction for visitors.
Ease of hike: this is a very easy and family friendly hike. Not so easy that it isn’t worthwhile for veteran hikers- it’s very worthwhile."

"We did the hike from Parking 11, which was a little over 3 km, and I definitely recommend it! It’s a great option for a quick hike, taking about an hour to complete. Make sure to wear good hiking shoes, though, as there are some rocky spots and a few uphill sections.
It’s such a cool hidden gem—such an interesting and unique place to explore. We absolutely loved it and thought it was a great experience. Definitely worth checking out!"

History of the Carbide Willson Ruins
Thomas Willson's vision for the plant was ambitious, aiming to harness the power of the nearby Meech Creek for industrial production. While the industrial era has passed, the stone structures have been reclaimed by nature, creating a unique and atmospheric historical site. The ruins are a popular spot for those interested in local history and industrial archaeology, providing a glimpse into a bygone era.
The Hiking Experience
While the hike is generally easy, it's important to be prepared. The trail can have some rocky sections and a few uphill climbs, so wearing sturdy hiking shoes is recommended. Many visitors also advise bringing bug spray, long sleeves, and pants, especially during warmer months, to protect against insects. The combination of the scenic forest walk, the historical ruins, and the soothing waterfall makes this a rewarding and enjoyable outdoor activity for a few hours.
Photography Opportunities
For the best results, consider visiting during the 'golden hours' of early morning or late afternoon when the light is softer and more diffused, creating a magical ambiance. Wide-angle lenses are excellent for capturing the scale of the ruins and the waterfall in their environment. Remember to also look for smaller details – the textures of the stone, the flow of the water, and the surrounding flora – to add depth to your photography. The ruins are a popular spot for engagement photos and general nature photography due to their unique aesthetic.
