Insider Tips

If I could recommend just a single, unique experience in Nanaimo it would have to be a visit to the Dinghy Dock Pub and Restaurant on Protection Island. The ferry leaves from downtown on the hour, takes just a few minutes, and the drinks are delicious. I hear the food is great as well but I arrived after they had closed the kitchen for the night. #explorebc #vancouverisland #nanaimo #protectionisl...

Visitors consistently praise the Nanaimo Museum for its engaging and well-maintained exhibits, particularly the realistic coal mine and touching displays on Indigenous culture and Japanese internment. The donation-based entry is a significant plus, making it accessible for all. While some note gift shop prices, the overall experience is highly recommended for its educational value and interactive nature, especially for families.

"Located in the heart of downtown, this place is 1 min away from the Courtyard by Marriott. The museum is smaller compared to other museums you must have visited, but it definitely packs a punch. It is very well maintained. Staff is friendly too. Entry is by donation only, you are free to pay any amount. Gift shop is also interesting, lots of stuff to choose from. The products I noticed are sold at a dollar or 2 more compared to regular shops. The museum has a lot of historic displays and portrays indigenous culture. There is also a coal mine exhibit, which is pretty much like a real mine. It's great for kids, too. Overall, this museum hosts informative and interactive exhibits that tell the story of Nanaimo's history. Recommended!"

"PEAK museum. I've been to so many museums about the town their in, and it's never particularly notable. But Nanaimo Museum is curated so deliberately, and has a vast array of subjects. It looks very modern and you can tell that the staff really cares. I was surprised at how much they accomplish and how refined it looks. If you need something to do for very cheap definitely go here!!!"
