An afternoon trip to see the Random Passage Site. As we arrived late in the season we missed the tearoom, crafts and storytelling but it was definitely cool to finally see the site of the television series and get a glimpse of early outport life. Reading Random Passage, by Bernice Morgan to Linda over Christmas period last year was such a treat and we fell in love with Mary Bundle and all the characters of Cape Random. The Site of The Random Passage mini-series, of which we are now proudly the owners of the CD series, have been welcoming visitors for I believe more than two decades. We were there on a spectacularly sunny afternoon. Loc...

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Random Passage Site for its authentic recreation of a 19th-century outport village and the engaging historical insights provided by knowledgeable guides. The stunning coastal scenery and opportunities for wildlife spotting are also frequently mentioned positives. However, a significant drawback for some is the site's lack of accessibility for wheelchair users and those with mobility issues, with steep, uneven terrain and stairs being a barrier.

"What a gem! We got there close to opening and everyone was so nice to us! They had a little issue with the bridge they were dealing with, but that didn’t stop them from showing us their wonderful Newfoundland hospitality. Rob walked us around the site and he was educational on many aspects of the history. He shared many wonderful stories about the site, cod fishing, resettlement, and his family history (dating to the 1600’s!). The views from the site were gorgeous and we saw dolphins, too! Highly recommend a visit…we aren’t familiar with the movie, but it’s worth coming for the history lesson alone!"

"The Random Passage site is stunning, the Tea Room and ticket-sale staff are very friendly, and the gift shop is stocked with beautiful local items. Unfortunately, I paid for but then could not attend the tour due to physical inaccessibility. A member of my group uses a wheelchair. Purchasing our tickets, we asked the ticket-seller about access. Unfortunately, the “gravel path” (which, if that’s what it actually was, would have been fine) to the site turned out to be a muddy, washed-out, steep downhill incline. The member of my group using a wheelchair waited in the parking lot while I hiked in to the site to scope it out. Once there, I discovered that there are no paths (gravel or otherwise) between buildings, only long, thick grass. And to enter any of the buildings, you have to be able to do stairs. Our entire group, including the wheelchair user, was present when we purchased our tickets. I wish that we had been warned by the ticket-seller BEFORE we paid that the site was completely inaccessible to a wheelchair user. We ended up paying, looking forward to the attraction, but then having to leave without going on the tour. So learn from our mistake: You need to be able to hike a distance both up and down steep, slippery inclines, traverse through thick grass, and climb up and down stairs to participate in the Random Passage tour. Four stars because when I hiked in alone, the site was absolutely beautiful, the Tea Room was as advertised, and the staff really are very friendly. But participating in the tour without full physical mobility is impossible, and you may be left to discover this on your own (as we were) AFTER you purchase your ticket."
