What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise downtown murals for their vibrant artistry and ability to transform urban spaces. The accessibility and free nature of this public art are major draws, offering unique photo opportunities and a chance to connect with local culture. Some visitors note that the experience can be spread out, requiring significant walking.
"Thank you to the lovely Jasmine A. who has been talking up New Media Gallery for weeks and then bringing me here to see the exhibit. New Media features contemporary art and the exhibits rotate (sometimes quite literally!) and are here for a short time and then onwards.
We were here in October and got to see "Measure" which is all about the movement of day into night, the cycles of the Sun and moon, the rotation of the Earth and the tools we use to measure time. Sadly, this exhibit ends on December 10 2023. Something new and exciting will follow.
The Earth Spin Orbit piece was pretty clever as the laser follows the Moon around the Earth. The Time Dilation artwork was hypnotizing to watch the rotation. And I watched more than one cycle of Semiconductor as it followed the Sun rising and setting.
Don't miss New Media Gallery. This is a great art and culture."

"I recently stumbled upon the New Media Gallery and had the most mind-blowing experience with their current exhibition, PneumoMachinic. I was fortunate to get a private tour from Gordon Duggan, the Founding Executive Director and Curator of the gallery. He personally explained each artwork and the fascinating stories behind them, making the experience truly eye-opening and unlike any other art gallery visit I’ve ever had.
The exhibition itself is a captivating exploration of breath and its cultural significance. The artworks by three different international artists—Ali Miharbi, Cristhian Ávila Cipriani, and Xoán-Xil—are remarkable, using sound and technology to evoke the essence of breath in various forms. From reconstructed human vocal tracts to ancient Peruvian flutes played by live wind data, and intricate wind-instrument automata, each piece was a unique blend of art and science that left me in awe.
I highly recommend visiting the New Media Gallery for anyone interested in innovative and thought-provoking art. I’ll definitely be coming back for future exhibitions!"

The Art of Urban Canvas
Many cities actively promote mural art through festivals, dedicated art districts, and public art programs. These initiatives not only beautify the city but also attract tourism and foster a sense of local pride. For instance, Downtown Orlando offers a 'Cultural Tour' that highlights its murals, art galleries, and sculptures, showcasing how art can be integrated into a city's identity.
When exploring downtown murals, remember to look for details that might be easily missed. Artists often embed hidden symbols or messages within their work. Engaging with these pieces can be a deeply rewarding experience, offering a fresh perspective on the urban environment. Whether you're a seasoned art enthusiast or a casual visitor, the world of downtown murals offers something captivating for everyone.
Navigating Mural Hotspots
To make the most of your mural hunt, consider using online resources. Many tourism websites and local art blogs provide maps or lists of notable murals. Some cities even organize guided tours, like the 'Urban Canvas' tour in Orlando, which can offer valuable insights into the art and its creators. These tours often highlight not just the murals but also other cultural attractions in the downtown area.
When planning your visit, check for local art festivals or events. These occasions can bring artists together, sometimes resulting in new murals being created or existing ones being celebrated. Such events often create a lively atmosphere, making the experience of discovering downtown murals even more engaging and memorable.
The Impact of Public Art
Beyond beautification, murals often serve as powerful storytelling tools. They can depict local history, celebrate cultural diversity, or address social issues, sparking conversations and encouraging reflection. The mural celebrating the Tucson Rodeo is a prime example of how public art can honor local heritage and create iconic landmarks. This form of art democratizes access to culture, making it visible and accessible to everyone who walks through the city streets.
Furthermore, the growth of mural art contributes to the local economy by drawing foot traffic to businesses and creating opportunities for artists. The dedication and skill involved in creating these large-scale works are a testament to the creative spirit of a city. As more cities embrace public art initiatives, downtown murals continue to be a dynamic and evolving feature of the urban landscape.
