What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Osoyoos Oxbows for its scenic beauty and abundant wildlife, particularly eagles and ospreys. The flat gravel road is ideal for walks and cycling, offering peaceful nature immersion. However, the intense summer heat and lack of shade are significant drawbacks, and overgrown trails can be challenging, especially with pets due to ticks and prickly vegetation.
"We stopped by here to get a bit of a walk and check out the surrounding area for any wildlife.
We saw some eagles and ospreys. It was pretty hot but was bearable with the wind. There’s no cover from the sun so keep that in mind. I would not do it on a hot day with no wind.
The eagle we saw caught a fish and was bring it back to its nest. We’re not sure if it had and baby eaglets. It was so amazing to see it flying by in full flight with the fish it caught!
The osprey was also flying back to its nest and they were a pair so possibly had babies in the nest. My wife got same incredible pictures of me of them flying by the nest!
A great place to walk around in and we did not see any today but we have seen a turtle here in the past. This trail is definitely worth a visit and a good way to get some exercise!"

"Absolutely gorgeous and scenic walk for humans and dogs alike. Our dog picked up a tick here, along with a heck of a lot of spear grass and cactus pricks. Maybe best without the pups - or cross over the bridge and walk along the dirt road instead! Lots of parts are overgrown. All in all, a stunning place to exist with nature and desert plants/wildflowers."
Ashley McLaren
"The SouthEast part of the Trail offers a 1.5 km stretch, making for a pleasant 3 km round trip. The gravel road along the canal is ideal for a walk, run or a bike ride, and it's also a fantastic place for birdwatching and wildlife spotting. The peaceful surroundings make it a lovely place to relax. Whether walking the dogs, watching birds, or simply soaking in the scenery, the Trail is a nice place to explore the unique biodiversity of the South Okanagan.
The North West part of the trail seems to go forever all the way to Oliver and beyond as it is part of International Hike and Bike Trail."

Wildlife Encounters at Osoyoos Oxbows
When exploring, remember that these are wild animals. It's crucial to maintain a safe and respectful distance, avoiding any actions that could disturb their natural behavior. Never feed the wildlife, as this can lead to dependency and health issues. The best way to enjoy these encounters is through quiet observation and photography from a distance.
Navigating the Trails and Terrain
However, venturing off the main gravel path can lead to overgrown trails that are less forgiving. These paths can be dense with spear grass and cactus, which can be uncomfortable and even pose a risk to pets, as one reviewer noted their dog picking up a tick and getting pricked by cactus. If you choose to explore these less-maintained trails, wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for uneven ground. For a more comfortable and predictable experience, sticking to the canal road is often the best strategy.
Best Practices for a Comfortable Visit
Hydration is non-negotiable. Always carry ample water, as there are no facilities within the WMA to refill your supply. Additionally, be mindful of insects, which can be more prevalent during warmer parts of the day. Wearing appropriate clothing, such as long sleeves and pants, can offer protection from both the sun and potential bites. For those with pets, extra caution is needed due to the presence of ticks and prickly vegetation, making the gravel road a safer bet.
