What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Guests rave about the Ottawa Jail Hostel's unique historical experience, friendly staff, and excellent downtown location. The complimentary breakfast and cleanliness are frequently praised, making it a memorable and surprisingly cozy stay despite its grim past. Some find the cells small, and the 'haunted' atmosphere might not be for everyone.
"I have stayed here more than once, and I absolutely love this place—not only for its great location, tasty breakfast, and perfect cleanliness, but also for the incredible coziness and the feeling of kindness. The whole staff are friendly, welcoming, and always ready to help, and they do it in such a warm way.
This time, kind Manu solved a very important issue for me and went out of his way with my accommodation. It truly felt like a birthday gift.
If you want not just a hostel, but a place where you can really feel a warm and kind atmosphere—this is the place for you."

"What an unique experience sleeping in a jail cell. At first, I was worried about the "creepiness", but it was totally fine. The cells are clean and have comfortable beds, warm blankets. The bathrooms and showers were fine. Nutritious breakfast is provided. Staff were polite and friendly. The tour of the jail was incredible - a real honest, eye-opener about Canadian history (very different from the Parliament tours). Great location. I would definitely stay here if I need to go to Ottawa again."

"Thank you so much! It was a really special experience to sleep in a used-to-be jail. The people were friendly, rooms and shared washing rooms were clean. I think they did a really good job at creating a cozy atmosphere in the cells/rooms! The free tour (free for guests at the hostel) was also really interesting.
One suggestion: we did the tour after our stay and I would recommend to do that as well - as we realized what happened at this place during and after the tour (well, it was a jail afterall). It might feel a bit strange to sleep there (especially if you are sensible to something like that)."
