The availability of amenities like food vendors and rest areas, along with the scenic views, makes it a highly recommended family outing and a unique cultural immersion. However, some have reported negative experiences with skate rentals, citing poor quality and unhelpful staff.
"One of the best things to do in Ottawa - an absolute must-visit in the winter! Stretching over 7.8 kilometers, it’s the world’s largest skating rink and offers a truly magical experience. The scenic views of downtown Ottawa paired with the lively atmosphere make it a fantastic family outing. The ice is well-maintained, and there are plenty of cozy rest areas to warm up with hot chocolate and BeaverTails. Whether you're a seasoned skater or a newbie, the Skateway is a fun time. It’s a perfect blend of outdoor adventure and Canadian culture!"

"The full 7.8 km was opened this winter in 2025 for skating. Many amenities like heated rooms to rest, toilets and food available."

"Capital Skates ruined the Rideau Canal for me.
I payed 33 CAD +tax and a 50$ deposit (that I’m still waiting for) for a pair of rusted and unsharpened skates. When I asked for a different pair of skates or to at least have them sharpened, the person serving me flat out refused and told me it was the only pair available in my size. I insisted on having the skates sharpened and was met with eye rolls and the service window being slammed in my face.
I can deal with rude customer service, but I can’t deal with a company’s total disregard for safety. Besides the totally dull blades, I couldn’t tie my own skates because of the amount of rust on the laces and loose pieces of metal. Hello tetanus!"

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Consider visiting during daylight hours for the best visibility and a more relaxed atmosphere. Weekday mornings tend to be less crowded, offering more space for children to practice their skating. Ensure children are dressed in warm, waterproof layers, including hats and gloves, to stay comfortable during their winter adventure.

The Rideau Canal Skateway: A Winter Icon
When the temperatures drop sufficiently, the National Capital Commission (NCC) meticulously prepares the ice surface. Specialized equipment, including ice plows, are used to maintain the smooth, wide lanes, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. The Skateway offers a unique blend of recreation and practicality, with many residents using it as a scenic and efficient commute to work, a concept that fascinates visitors.
Beyond the skating itself, the Skateway is a hub of winter activity. Along its length, you'll find amenities like heated rest areas, washrooms, and food vendors serving classic Canadian treats like BeaverTails. This makes it a perfect destination for a family outing, a romantic winter date, or simply a chance to experience a quintessential Canadian winter day.
Navigating the Skateway: Tips for a Smooth Experience
When it comes to skating, bringing your own skates is highly recommended. While rentals are available, reviews suggest that their condition can vary, with some experiencing rust or dull blades. Investing in your own comfortable, well-fitting skates will significantly enhance your time on the ice. If you do opt for rentals, inspect them carefully.
For those not skating, or for families with young children, the Skateway offers a dedicated walking path alongside the skating lanes. This allows everyone to enjoy the winter scenery and atmosphere. Strollers are generally permitted on these paths, making it a viable option for new parents. Remember to dress in layers, as Ottawa winters can be quite cold, and consider bringing a thermos of hot chocolate to complement your BeaverTails treat!
