Bucket list item: Big Chute ✅ This was hands down the best way to end our journey on the Trent-Severn Waterway. I’m still amazed by this piece of equipment, and the Parks Canada staff who operate it are just as impressive. As uneasy as it is to be on your boat while it’s lifted out of the water and carried over land, the staff made us feel so comfortable and confident. Their clear instructions an...

The scenery around the lock is also beautiful, especially in fall, wothy to spend some time walking around and enjoying a picnic.

"A beautiful structure and fun place to be at the annual paddle and lock event in July!

Would come again but maybe in a canoe or a comfortable kayak (not a playboat kr white water kayak) as you may be sitting in this for 3-4 hours (specifically for the paddle lock event) depending on crowd sizes and line ups to get up and down the lock!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Engineering Marvel: A Hydraulic Lift Lock

The Peterborough Lift Lock (Lock 21) is a testament to early 20th-century engineering ingenuity. Completed in 1904, it was designed to overcome a significant 65-foot elevation change along the Trent-Severn Waterway. Unlike traditional lock systems that use a series of gates and chambers, this is a hydraulic lift lock. It consists of two massive caissons (watertight chambers) that are counterbalanced. Water is pumped into one caisson to make it heavier, causing it to descend, while the other ascends. This process allows boats to be lifted or lowered in a single, dramatic operation. Instagram+2

This innovative design made it the highest hydraulic lift lock in the world upon its completion. The scale of the structure is impressive, with each caisson weighing approximately 1,300 tons when full of water. The operation is surprisingly smooth and efficient, a marvel that continues to fascinate visitors today. The Parks Canada staff are highly skilled in operating this historic machinery, ensuring a safe and memorable experience for boaters. TikTok

Visitors can learn more about the intricate workings of the lock at the nearby visitor centre, which often features interactive exhibits and historical displays detailing its construction and importance to the region's transportation network. Observing the lock in action is a highlight for many, offering a unique glimpse into Canada's industrial heritage. Instagram

Experiencing the Trent-Severn Waterway

The Peterborough Lift Lock is a vital component of the Trent-Severn Waterway, a historic 386-kilometer canal system in Ontario, Canada. This waterway connects Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay on Lake Huron, traversing a series of lakes and rivers. It was primarily built for navigation and defense, but today it's a popular recreational route for boaters, kayakers, and canoeists. TikTokInstagram+1

Boating on the Trent-Severn offers a unique journey through diverse landscapes, from bustling towns to serene wilderness. The waterway features 44 locks, including the iconic Peterborough Lift Lock, which are operated by Parks Canada. Each lock has its own character and history, contributing to the rich tapestry of the waterway's heritage. The experience of passing through these locks is a quintessential part of exploring this region. TikTokInstagram

For those looking to experience the waterway, options range from day trips to extended cruising. Many visitors rent houseboats or bring their own vessels. The annual Lock and Paddle event, held at the Peterborough Lift Lock, is a special occasion where paddlers can experience the lock system, often with a large gathering of canoes and kayaks. A Photographer's Paradise: Capturing the Lift Lock

The Peterborough Lift Lock offers numerous opportunities for stunning photography. The sheer scale of the hydraulic lift mechanism is awe-inspiring, and capturing a boat in transit provides a dynamic element to your shots. The surrounding parkland also offers beautiful vistas, especially during the fall foliage season, when the colors add a vibrant backdrop to the historic structure. Reddit

For the best results, consider visiting during the golden hours – early morning or late afternoon – when the light is softer and more dramatic. A wide-angle lens is highly recommended to capture the entire lock and its surroundings in one frame. For more detailed shots of the boats or the intricate machinery, a telephoto lens can be useful. Don't forget to climb the stairs to the top of the lock for panoramic views of Peterborough and the Otonabee River. Reddit

Remember to be mindful of safety barriers and other visitors when composing your shots. While drones can offer unique perspectives, always check and adhere to Parks Canada regulations regarding drone usage in the area. Instagram
