"Beautiful scenery and a close drive, bike ride, or walk from most parts of the city. Excellent trails, though as of mid-June 2022 some are flooded due to water levels in the Fraser or Nechako Rivers. Assortment of wildlife to be seen - mostly birds during my visit - and be sure to stop and appreciate the tree bark carvings along the trails."
Joshua Baillie
"Visited the nearby BC Central Train Museum then walked the paths around Cottonwood Island Nature Park. Found twelve of the twenty carvings. Trail isn't that well marked and there are no maps available. I used google maps which helped a bit but my wife used her Pokemon app and darn it kept us on all the trails and alerted us as we approached carvings. We thought finding twelve out of twenty was good. Locals we talked to say some carvings have been vandalized by tourist."

Finding these carvings can sometimes be a challenge, as trail markings aren't always clear. Some visitors have found success using navigation apps on their phones, which can alert them as they approach a carving. The artistry involved in these carvings, often attributed to local artists like Elmer, showcases a deep connection to the natural environment and provides a memorable experience for park-goers.
Navigating Cottonwood Island's Trails
However, it's important to be aware of potential seasonal challenges. During the spring, particularly in June, water levels in the Nechako River can rise, leading to flooded sections of the trails. Visitors planning a trip during this time should check local conditions beforehand. While the trails are generally well-kept, signage can sometimes be inconsistent, so having a map or using a GPS-enabled app on your phone can be beneficial for navigation, especially when searching for the park's famous tree carvings.
Wildlife Encounters and Nature's Spectacle
While these encounters are a highlight for many, it's crucial to remember that these are wild animals. Visitors are advised to maintain a respectful distance and avoid feeding or disturbing them. Additionally, during warmer months, mosquitoes can be quite prevalent, especially in the wooded areas and near the water. Packing effective insect repellent is highly recommended to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience exploring the park's natural spectacles.
