The walk along the piers to the lighthouse is a highlight, offering great photo opportunities. However, a significant concern raised is the lack of safety railings, making it a place requiring extra caution, particularly for families with young children.

"This lighthouse is out at the waters edge. The walk is nice, the waves lapping the rock is soothing, and it is close to the Port Dalhouse Range Rear lighthouse. People fish here, and there are a couple of benches to sit on. Wish we could've stayed longer or seen the sunset."

"Not open to the public, the Port Dalhousie Range Front Lighthouse stands at the far end of the east pier of Port Dalhousie. As part of the improvements made during the construction of the second version of the Welland Canal, a new harbor (harbour?) was built at Port Dalhousie that provided a depth of twelve feet instead of eight-and-a-half feet. Parallel piers were carried roughly 2,000 feet out into Lake Ontario

In 1878, a square, wooden tower was built at the end of a new pier, about 300 feet north of the existing main lighthouse, to form a set of range lights for entering the canal. It is a sturdy, square, wooden lighthouse with a substantial bracketed platform enclosed by a pipe railing and crowned by an octagonal metal lantern.

At the end of the pier, you can walk completely around the lighthouse though I think my favorite picture is from the west side of the canal inlet. I was here in the morning - I'll bet the sunsets here are fantastic."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of Port Dalhousie's Lighthouses

The Port Dalhousie Range Front Lighthouse, standing at the end of the east pier, is a testament to the area's maritime importance. Originally, a wooden tower was built in 1878 as part of improvements for the second Welland Canal. This new harbor allowed for greater depths, and the range lights were crucial for guiding ships safely into the canal. The current structure, a sturdy, square, wooden lighthouse with an octagonal metal lantern, replaced an earlier one and has been a navigational aid for decades. Reddit

These lighthouses served as a vital set of range lights, meaning two lights were positioned in line with each other. When a ship captain aligned the front and rear lights, they knew they were on the correct course for entering the harbor and canal. This system was essential for safe navigation, especially during challenging weather conditions on Lake Ontario. The piers themselves were constructed to extend out into the lake, creating a protected harbor and facilitating smoother passage for vessels. Reddit

While the Port Dalhousie Range Front Lighthouse is not open to the public for interior tours, its presence on the pier offers a tangible connection to the region's shipping history. The piers have been subject to various improvements over time, including those made during the construction of the canal, ensuring their longevity and continued role in the harbor's infrastructure.
