Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Art Gallery of Ontario for its impressive and diverse collections, particularly its strong Canadian art holdings and engaging temporary exhibitions like 'The Culture'. The stunning Frank Gehry-designed architecture is another major highlight, offering a visually dynamic experience. While general admission can be pricey, the availability of free Wednesday nights and affordable annual passes makes it accessible.

"My biggest note: this is not a gallery you can easily see completely in one visit! You could easily spend one visit on a single level alone. And a map is recommended - this place is a wanderer’s dream, without a single obvious path to follow.

The variety and quality of artwork is fantastic. There is special attention paid to Canadian artists and Indigenous artists, which I enjoyed. And the building itself is stunning, especially the atrium and spiral staircase.

The food options are expensive, so my partner and I opted for a simple sandwich at the Espresso Bar instead of a full meal at the Bistro. But, the food options at the Bistro did sound delicious."

"The Art Gallery of Ontario is such a unique experience. It’s not like the Louvre or the big “standard” museums it has its own vibe and character. Alongside world-famous pieces from Renoir, Monet, and Rembrandt, the gallery also shines a spotlight on Canadian artists, which makes it stand out.

I especially enjoyed the miniature portraits and the ancient gold and ivory pieces they give such an insightful glimpse into how people actually lived. Since I could only explore a few sections on my first visit, I decided to get the annual pass so I can return and keep discovering more. Definitely worth it if you enjoy art and want a place that feels both world-class and uniquely Canadian."

"There is an under 25 free pass available on the AGO website. I utilized it today which was lots of fun but have an ID on you because they will check. I loved AGO!!! I studied Canadian art in my undergraduate course so when I saw the group of seven paintings I was really happy. They are a MUST. Canadian landscape paintings on the second floor are a delight for the eyes. The nature and day-to-day life paintings were a treat. There is honesty and sincerity in them. The use of colours 🥹

There is a little cafe! and there’s a top floor view outside. The museum is so cool to walk around. So many details to catch. I can’t wait to come back and look at the group of seven paintings again."
