Reviews Summary

Visitors often praise the Japan Foundation Toronto for its quiet, clean, and accessible platform for Japanese art and culture, particularly highlighting the informative exhibitions and the extensive library resources. However, some experiences have been marred by unwelcoming interactions with staff, and certain exhibition designs have been noted as difficult to view.

"A cute little library and space for exhibition.
We were lucky and was a "Hiroshima poster" Galery. Staff super nice 👍"

Itzia Noriega

"Visited the Japan Foundation for the first time to view the ‘Built Environment: An Alternative Guide to Japan’.

It’s unfortunate, but my experience was marred by a pretty horrible first impression from the older gentleman who was greeting visitors and guiding them right at the entrance. I’m not sure why, but this person was pretty rude with how he spoke to me and made me feel unwelcome in the space. This was in comparison to a warmer and more animated way of interacting with other guests.

It is unfortunate because this is my impression of this Foundation, and he is representing his culture and country in this space and exhibition.

In terms of the exhibition itself, I liked the video that was screened at the start of the experience to set the stage and provide general information on the content. I appreciate the unique presentation of information with the plywood casework displaying the photos and descriptions of the sites. I did find that the information was not easily viewable from the user’s point of view - for instance, in several cases, you have to read the description upside down.

It should be mentioned too that this space and exhibit is not wheelchair accessible, which is unfortunate as well because it excludes an entire demographic of people to prioritize a way of presenting information on the floor."

"The Japan Foundation never disappoints with their range of interesting exhibitions featuring different aspects of life in Japan. I recently visited the “Built Environment” exhibition. The host at the front desk was very informative and kind as he guided me through the rooms. There’s also a nicely printed booklet with more info on each site in the exhibit. Overall a great experience!"
