Reviews Summary

The Rock Oasis is praised for its strong community, fun setting, and excellent coaching, particularly from Head Coach Pia. Many climbers have seen significant improvement through personalized training. However, some long-term members express disappointment with the facility's maintenance, citing issues with worn mats and upkeep.

"For the last few months I've been doing personal training with Pia, the Head Coach at the Rock Oasis, and it has completely transformed my climbing. Within a month I was already noticing tangible improvements to my technique, strength and endurance. Pia is very knowledgeable and provides great feedback during one-on-one training sessions. Her monthly training plans are very detailed and provide you with everything you need to progress and meet your goals. Pia does a great job of getting to know you and your climbing goals so that your plan can be personalized to you and what you're hoping to get out of training. I highly recommend reaching out to Pia to ask about her services and to see if personal training is right for you — I know I have found working with her to be incredibly helpful.

If you are looking for some kind of coaching but not ready for personal training, I would also recommend keeping an eye out for the Rock Oasis's adult programming. Prior to starting personal training, I took Bouldering 201 with Pia and had a really positive experience. This course was 6 weeks long with about 6-10 students in total, and was a great opportunity to learn about intermediate-level climbing techniques, receive feedback from a coach, and get to know other climbers from the gym community!"

"I have been a member for more than 5 years and for the first time I’m considering not renewing my membership.

For as much money as they are charging for memberships it’s a shame to see so little invested into the facility itself. They have multiple other facilities in the GTA (Joe Rockhead’s and UTB) that seem to have much higher standards for up keep, so I’m unsure as to why Rock Oasis is being neglected.

Bouldering mats are ripped and worn. The only slab wall has been closed for at least four weeks due to “maintenance”, yet no work has been done on it. The air quality is poor. The main sinks are outdated and full of grime and mold. The overhead lights are constantly burnt out and/or flickering, which affects your ability to climb in some of the bays. Top ropes are often too short to tie/clip into comfortably.

Rock Oasis has a great community, fun setting and welcoming staff, however, the facility is simply not well maintained by the owners and it’s beginning to overshadow the positives. It’s unfortunate to see the lack of care put into this otherwise awesome gym."

"I started training with Pia at the beginning of the year. I've been climbing on and off since the 90's and when I have trained I pieced it together from stuff I saw online. Working with Pia has transformed my climbing. First in the assessment she highlighted that what I thought was my issue - finger strength - wasn't. I would have just kept going on trying to get a stronger crimp.

Instead we focused on load level, intensity, technique, and building strength and skill through climbing specific exercises. Over the year my technique, balance, core strength and body tension have improved greatly.

Having a training plan has made showing up easy and progress evident. It also helped me keep my tendency to over train in check.

On top of being a coaching genius - Pia is also kind, fun and approachable. Making it easy to have an easy going relationship that met me where I was at and encouraged me moving forward.

At 51 years old I am climbing the hardest boulders of my life. With a clear path to continuing to improve. 10/10 would recommend.

Thanks
Pia"

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

The Rock Oasis can be a fun destination for families, especially for birthday parties. However, it's crucial to be aware of the gym's policies regarding guests and supervision. While the climbing itself is accessible for various ages, ensure that any accompanying adults are comfortable with the gym's rules and staff interactions. Reddit

For younger climbers, the beginner-friendly routes are a great starting point. It's advisable to check if there are specific family hours or programs available. Be prepared for potential crowds, especially during weekend events, and ensure adequate supervision for children at all times. Reddit

The Rock Oasis is an excellent choice for those new to climbing. The gym features inclusive setting with plenty of beginner-friendly routes, making it easy to get started and build confidence. Reddit

Coaching and Skill Development

The Rock Oasis is highly praised for its coaching services, particularly by individuals like Pia, the Head Coach. Many members have experienced significant improvements in their climbing technique, strength, and endurance through personalized training plans and one-on-one sessions. These programs are tailored to individual goals, addressing specific weaknesses and building on strengths. For those not ready for personal training, the gym also offers adult programming, such as the Bouldering 201 course, which provides a structured environment to learn intermediate techniques and receive expert feedback. Reddit

This focus on skill development makes The Rock Oasis a valuable resource for climbers looking to progress beyond the basics. The coaching approach emphasizes climbing-specific exercises, load levels, intensity, and technique, leading to noticeable improvements in balance, core strength, and body tension. Even at 51 years old, one member reported climbing the hardest boulders of their life thanks to this structured guidance. Reddit

While the gym is excellent for beginners, some experienced climbers suggest that the setting could be more varied to better challenge advanced climbers and bridge the gap between beginner and expert grades. However, the availability of skilled coaches ensures that dedicated climbers can still find pathways to improvement and refine their skills. Reddit

Facility Maintenance and Upkeep

A recurring theme in reviews for The Rock Oasis is the concern over facility maintenance. While the gym boasts a great community, fun setting, and welcoming staff, several members have noted a lack of investment in the facility itself. Issues such as ripped and worn bouldering mats, prolonged closure of walls for 'maintenance' with no visible work, poor air quality, and outdated, grimy sinks have been highlighted. Reddit

Furthermore, burnt-out or flickering overhead lights can impact the climbing experience in certain areas, and top ropes are sometimes reported as being too short for comfortable tying or clipping. This contrasts with other facilities in the GTA managed by the same company, which are perceived to have higher standards of upkeep. Reddit

Despite these maintenance concerns, the positive aspects of the gym, such as its community and setting, continue to attract climbers. However, the lack of consistent care for the facility is a significant drawback for long-term members who feel it overshadows the gym's otherwise positive attributes. Reddit

Community and Social Aspect

The Rock Oasis is frequently lauded for its strong and welcoming community. It's described as a place where climbers of all levels can feel comfortable and connect with others who share their passion. This inclusive atmosphere is particularly beneficial for beginners who are just starting their climbing journey. Reddit

The gym's setting is often described as fun, and the staff are generally seen as welcoming, contributing to a positive social environment. This makes it an ideal spot for group outings, birthday parties, and for individuals looking to make new friends within the climbing scene. TikTokReddit

While most experiences are positive, one review detailed a negative encounter with a staff member during a birthday party, leading to feelings of unfair treatment. However, this appears to be an isolated incident, as the overall sentiment regarding the community and staff remains overwhelmingly positive. Reddit
