Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Elqui River Estuary for its rich biodiversity, particularly its abundant birdlife, and the beautiful sunset views. However, many note the significant issue of trash and litter, along with poorly marked trails and a lack of facilities, which detract from the overall experience. Community efforts to protect the area are recognized, but more institutional support is needed.

"El humedal alberga una tremenda biodiversidad. La más visible es la de aves, aunque la observación en detalle permite desconocer flora nativa, algunos artrópodos y roedores silvestres. El lugar tiene señaléticas precarias mayoritariamente instaladas por ciudadanos. Hay basura, residuos en el cuerpo de agua. Falta mejorar este hermoso lugar de la ciudad."

Francisco Lopez

"The great Elqui River wetland is the main wetland in the commune of La Serena, a river that travels many kilometers from the mountains to reach the sea. But first, I'd like to start with the "bad" side. Unfortunately, this area is exposed to many things, one of which is the loss of habitat for the species that live there, the notorious lack of water, which is a major headache for the entire region, and little or no institutional action on environmental, urban, and other fronts. If I could describe the place, it would easily be classified as a labyrinth; the space is highly variable and also very interesting to explore in search of birds. For some reason, there are some very dirty areas and others that are not, which have been intervened, and well, I believe the work here is enormous from top to bottom. A complex reality for the drought landscape that, as a result of mining and agriculture, has left this river and estuary completely disturbed and unfortunately abandoned. Even so, the place, from the more astute observer's perspective, is beautiful and has great environmental value."
