Reviews Summary

Visitors describe climbing Licancabur as a 'once in a lifetime' experience, marked by breathtaking sunrises and stunning high desert vistas. While the ascent is physically demanding and requires significant acclimatization, the unparalleled beauty from the summit makes the effort worthwhile for many. Some find the climb challenging but ultimately rewarding.

"I took the Rota dos Salares tour with the Desertour mediation company and loved it. The group was large, but the guide managed to give us time at each location to take photos and enjoy the experience. Having breakfast facing the "Montanha do Povo" was a unique experience.
It is a beautiful region and just looking at this place and its power and beauty is enough to put us in a meditative state without any effort.
I recommend going with a group. It starts at a higher region and it is really impressive and not safe to drive if you are not experienced."

"Unproblematic ascent, which however requires some alpine experience and good acclimatization (steeper scree at a considerable altitude). Accommodation, if necessary, in the nearby Refugio Alto (bolivian side; well managed, good food); from there best by jeep past Laguna Blanca and Laguna Verde to the end of the track. During the ascent fantastic views of the two lagoons."

One of the most beautiful views from the summit and tears dropping moment !... then going down... another suffering.... but at the end.... one of the most beautiful moments in life !."

🚇 🗺️ Getting There

Licancabur is located on the border of Chile and Bolivia. Most visitors access it via San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. From there, guided tours are the most common way to reach the volcano's base and attempt the climb. Some tours may involve crossing into Bolivia to reach the Refugio Alto. Reddit

While it's possible to drive part of the way, reaching the trailhead often requires an experienced driver and a 4x4 vehicle due to the terrain. Many opt for guided tours for this reason. Reddit

🎫 🧭 Onsite Experience

Many climbers aim for an early morning start (around 4:00 AM) to reach the summit for a spectacular sunrise. This also allows for descent during daylight hours. Reddit

Layered clothing is essential. Bring warm, windproof outer layers, thermal base layers, sturdy hiking boots, gloves, and a hat. Trekking poles can be very helpful on the scree. Reddit
