"The Parque por la Paz, formerly Villa Grimaldi, is a place of great historical and emotional significance. Originally, this 3-hectare estate was a gathering place for Chile's intellectual elite. However, after General Augusto Pinochet's military coup in 1973, it was taken over by the DINA, Pinochet's secret police, and converted into a center for interrogation and torture. An estimated 4,500 people were held here, of whom at least 226 disappeared without a trace. The victims included political activists, students, and trade unionists, as well as well-known figures such as British doctor Sheila Cassidy and the future Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, who was tortured here along with her mother.
Today, the Parque por la Paz serves as a memorial and educational center where the memory of the victims of the dictatorship is kept alive. Visitors can view replicas of torture devices and rooms, including the so-called Chile Houses, small cabins in which up to four people were forced to live completely immobile.
