At Ventisquero Colgante, the Hanging Glacier of Queulat National Park, nature reveals its raw power as a massive block of ice thunders into the emerald waters below. This breathtaking spectacle, known as desprendimiento, is a reminder of the glacier’s constant motion—a living relic of the Patagonian Andes. Reviews Summary

While the Queulat Hanging Glacier offers a visually stunning natural spectacle, visitor experiences are mixed due to inconsistent trail access and payment issues. Some find the views breathtaking and worth the fee, even with limited trails, while others feel it's overpriced and disappointing when key attractions are closed without notice. Reddit

"At the moment, this park is really not worth the price, because only routes 3 and 4 are available (see picture). Routes 1 and 2 will remain closed until around 20 December. As we learned when we asked the ranger. I asked about this so that I could inform other visitors before they visit, because CONAF fails to inform visitors in advance.

Route 3 is a 10-minute loop where you only see trees and a look out over the bridge/river. Route 4 is less than a 5-minute walk, and from far away you can see the glacier and waterfalls (see picture, 2 times zoom).

We came for route 1 (about a 2-hour walk) and were very disappointed to find it closed when we wanted to cross the bridge. The ranger at the entrance to the park did not point this out to us when scanning our tickets. Furthermore, there is no mention of this on the website. I think it is ridiculous that you have to pay CLP $11,400 per person for a 15-minute visit, during which the main attraction is closed without any mention of this. That's why I'm giving 1 star!

Advice for CONAF:

- Apply a reduced rate, because you cannot sell it in this way.
- Inform people in advance, by mentioning this when selling the tickets."

Lotte Z

"I advise any tourist to skip this park at the moment.
- 100% full entrance fee charged
- main hiking route closed
- boat/lake access closed
- only "longer" hiking path (leading to the only viewpoint where you can actually see the lake from VERY far away; see as per the photo) in pathetic condition (mudbath)
- the only thing the park has to offer are 2 viewpoints (you can see the glacier from very far away) and a little tiny loop

Underwhelming experience that felt like a rip off. I'd skip and spend my time and money elsewhere."

gruengnom

"We almost skipped this place because of the comments — come on, people, are you dead inside? The views are absolutely breathtaking. Totally worth the money, even with only trails 3 and 4 open right now. It’s not a small view at all — it’s stunning and impressive!"

Public transportation options can be limited and infrequent. Buses may run along the Carretera Austral, but schedules can be unreliable. Renting a vehicle offers the most flexibility for reaching the park and exploring the surrounding Aysén region. Instagram

Once inside the park, follow the marked paths. The main trails lead to viewpoints of the glacier and waterfall. Be aware that trail availability can change, so confirm with park rangers upon arrival. Reddit

Puyuhuapi is the closest town and offers various accommodation options, from hotels to guesthouses. It's a charming village worth exploring itself. Instagram

Pack layers of clothing, waterproof outerwear, sturdy hiking shoes, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a hat. Given the unpredictable weather, being prepared is key. Instagram

🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry

Entrance fees can vary. Some visitors have reported paying CLP $11,400 per person, but this price may be considered high if main attractions are closed. Reddit It's advisable to check the official CONAF website or inquire locally for the most current pricing. Reddit

Park hours can vary seasonally. Importantly, access to the main glacier viewpoint may be restricted after 13:30, so plan your visit accordingly. Reddit

Payment methods can be an issue. Some visitors have been denied entry because the park only accepts specific digital payment methods (like PayPal or bank transfer) and does not accept cash or credit cards. Reddit It's crucial to confirm accepted payment methods in advance. Reddit

Visitors have suggested that a reduced rate should be applied when main hiking routes are closed. Reddit Currently, there's no widely advertised discount system, but it's worth inquiring if significant portions of the park are inaccessible. Reddit

While some national parks in Chile offer online booking, it's not always consistently available or clearly communicated for Queulat. Be prepared for potential on-site payment issues and confirm payment methods beforehand. Reddit

🎫 🏞️ Onsite Experience

The primary attraction is the Ventisquero Colgante (Hanging Glacier) and its associated waterfall. The park also features trails through the Valdivian rainforest, offering opportunities for wildlife viewing and enjoying the lush scenery. TikTokInstagram

The time needed can vary greatly depending on trail availability. If only shorter trails (like Route 3 and 4) are open, a visit might only take 15-30 minutes to see the glacier from a distance. Reddit If longer routes are accessible, allow 2-3 hours for a more comprehensive experience. Reddit

Trail difficulty varies. Some paths are short and easy, while others can be more challenging, especially if they are muddy or unmaintained. Reddit The trail to the main viewpoint is generally considered moderate. Instagram

The park is known for its rich biodiversity, including various bird species, mammals like the kodkod (a small wild cat), and diverse plant life characteristic of the Valdivian temperate rainforest. TikTok

Yes, there is a designated viewpoint (Mirador Ventisquero Colgante) that offers views of the glacier and the waterfall. However, some visitors note that significant zooming is required to see them clearly from certain vantage points. Reddit

📸 📸 Photography

The main viewpoint overlooking the glacier and waterfall offers dramatic shots. The surrounding rainforest trails also provide opportunities for capturing the lush greenery and unique flora. Instagram+1

Morning light can be beautiful for illuminating the glacier and waterfall, but be mindful of potential restrictions on accessing the viewpoint after 13:30. Reddit Overcast days can also enhance the moody atmosphere of the rainforest. Instagram

A wide-angle lens is useful for capturing the expansive landscapes of the glacier, waterfall, and the dense rainforest. However, a telephoto lens can be helpful for isolating details of the ice formations or wildlife. Instagram

Don't overlook the details within the rainforest itself – the moss-covered trees, unique ferns, and smaller streams can make for compelling close-up shots. TikTok

The primary challenge is the unpredictable weather, which can quickly change from sunny to rainy, affecting visibility and light. Also, the distance to the glacier from some viewpoints may require a zoom lens. Reddit
