Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Cementerio de Disidentes to be a place of historical significance with beautiful marble graves and stunning city views. While some note concerns about the surrounding area's safety and the cemetery's upkeep, many appreciate its unique cultural heritage and photographic potential.

"Actually quite nice to walk around the cemeteries (even the outside) as it offers you a great view of the city, amongst some of the beautiful gardens within the cemetery itself.

The actual walk around the outside of the cemetery is covered in graffiti and looks a little merky, but as mentioned above, it offers great views of the city."

"Cementerio Disidentes in Valparaiso is the burial place for many non-Catholics who died in Chile starting in the early 1800's (19th century). Early in Chilean history, the country was officially a Catholic nation, and non-Catholics were not allowed to be buried in municipal cemeteries. This cemetery was created and contains the burial places of many foreigners who died in Chile, including sailors and other persons from USA, England, Europe, Asia, and many other places around the world.

This place is a treasure trove of genealogy for families who have European or American relatives who died in and around Valparaiso, Chile.

For those affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it may be of interest to know that a member, Fernando F. Caballero, a local Chilean (former regional representative in Chile) found documentation in the cemetery's record books that Omner Pratt, son of Parley P. Pratt and Phoebe Pratt, was buried there in January 1852. Omner Pratt died during Parley P. Pratt's (with with Phoebe) mission to Chile with Elder Rufus C. Allen when Chile was dedicated for the preaching of the Gospel. See attached photos."

A Sanctuary for Non-Catholics

The Cementerio de Disidentes in Valparaíso holds a unique place in Chilean history. Established in 1825, it was a direct response to the religious landscape of the time. Chile, as a predominantly Catholic nation, did not permit non-Catholics to be buried in its municipal cemeteries. This created a significant challenge for the growing population of foreign residents, primarily British and European merchants, sailors, and their families, who adhered to Protestant faiths.

The creation of this dedicated cemetery provided a dignified resting place for these individuals, allowing them to be interred according to their own religious customs. The cemetery's name, 'Disidentes,' directly reflects this historical context, referring to those who dissented from the established Catholic faith. Today, it stands as a testament to the multicultural heritage of Valparaíso and the lives of the many foreigners who shaped the city's past. InstagramReddit

Architectural and Artistic Merit

Beyond its historical significance, the Cementerio de Disidentes is renowned for its architectural beauty and funerary art. Many of the tombstones are elaborate marble structures, showcasing the craftsmanship and artistic styles prevalent during the 19th and early 20th centuries. These monuments range from simple, elegant markers to grand mausoleums, each telling a silent story of the lives they commemorate.

The cemetery's location on Cerro Panteón also contributes to its visual appeal. Perched on a hillside, it offers stunning panoramic views of Valparaíso's colorful houses, winding streets, and the vast Pacific Ocean. This elevated position, combined with the intricate sculptures and inscriptions on the graves, creates a poignant and picturesque atmosphere, making it a popular spot for photographers and those seeking a contemplative experience. Navigating the Terrain and Safety

Visiting the Cementerio de Disidentes requires some practical considerations, primarily related to its location and the terrain. Situated on one of Valparaíso's steep hills, comfortable walking shoes are essential. Visitors should be prepared for inclines and potentially uneven pathways within the cemetery grounds. The effort is often rewarded with spectacular views of the city and harbor, offering a unique perspective that many travelers find worthwhile. Reddit

While the cemetery offers historical and visual appeal, some visitors have noted concerns about safety in the surrounding areas, particularly in the late afternoon. It's advisable to plan your visit during daylight hours and be aware of your surroundings. If you're concerned about navigating the hills, consider using local taxis or 'micros' (buses) to get as close as possible to the entrance. Reddit
