What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Huanglong Scenic Area for its absolutely breathtaking and unique natural beauty, particularly its vibrant, multi-colored travertine pools and terraces. The option to use the cable car is highly recommended for managing the strenuous climb and altitude, allowing for a more enjoyable downhill walk through the spectacular scenery. While the altitude can be challenging, the visual reward is considered well worth the effort, making it a once-in-a-lifetime destination.
"Huanglong National Park is a must see if you are planning a trip to Jiuzhaigou National Park. You can say that it is quite similar to Yellowstone National Park minus the bears and the geysers, but with respect to colourful ponds, this is way superior. The Wucai (Five-Colour) Pond is definitely the highlight, but walking down from there you keep seeing literally hundreds of ponds of different shapes, sizes and colours, as well as vast areas of travertines. At one point you would be so amazed and wonder if it is ever going to end.
Altitude sickness is a concern as the most popular areas are 3500 metres above sea level. A good strategy will be to allow yourself to adapt to the altitude gradually. Our group spent a couple of days in Jiuzhaigrou before coming here. Medication or supplements have to be taken a week before the trip. We also purchased oxygen cans just in case we need them. A large size can only costs 20 RMB and should lasts one day for 2 people. They can be purchased at local shops before the visit. Just be aware that they are not allowed on the high speed trains."

"Huanglong is a beautiful place to visit and definitely worth the journey. The natural scenery is stunning, with unique landscapes and clear pools that make the trip memorable. However, be prepared for a good amount of stair climbing, as the paths involve many steps and some steep sections. The hike can be challenging, especially for those not used to high altitudes, so pacing yourself is important. The weather at the top can be quite cold, so bringing warm clothing is a must. Despite the effort, the views and fresh mountain air make the experience rewarding and unforgettable for visitors"

"If you been to Jiuzhaigou, you can do with or without Huanglong. Compared to White water terraces in Shangri-La, this is a bigger scale but fenced up, while Shangri-la you can walk across it.
Just buy the entry ticket online. Ropeway & e-car (1way or 2way) you can decide later & buy there, keeping your options open.
E-car will shave off 2.3km of walking 1way, tickets are limited to 5-6k/day, not much an issue for morning travellers. (Attached pic) the drop off point for the e-car, you need to walk 8 stories down & back up for return e-car. :(
Take note of the ticket pricing & not to be ripped off from 3rd parties combi tickets. Safer to buy from official HL online site, just input [Name], select [Passport & PP numbers] for foreigners, select [Country].
Entry fee CNY170
Ropeway CNY80 (up) / CNY40 (down)
e-Car CNY15 (1way) / CNY20 (round)
There are 2 main entrances 2km apart, 1st for hiking up/down & 2nd is further away directly leads to ropeway. Things to note are, 2hr drive away from JZG scenic area & 35min drive to HSR HLJZ station. Looking back, maybe spending the time & money to enter JZG for a 2nd day & fully explore everything in JZG would be wiser. For those who wanted to see this for the 1st time, it will probably be worth it."

The Unique Karst Landscape of Huanglong
These travertine pools are not just visually spectacular but also ecologically significant, supporting diverse forest ecosystems and providing habitats for rare wildlife. The landscape's formation is an ongoing process, with new formations constantly developing. Visitors often describe the experience as stepping into a surreal, painted world, unlike anything they've seen before.
The Huanglonggou (Yellow Dragon Valley) is the heart of this natural wonder, where the most concentrated and impressive travertine formations are found. The name 'Huanglong' itself means 'Yellow Dragon,' a fitting description for the winding, golden-hued valley that resembles a dragon from above.
Navigating Huanglong: Altitude and Accessibility
To make the experience more accessible and less physically demanding, the cable car system is a popular option. Visitors can take the cable car up to a higher point, significantly reducing the uphill climb. From the cable car's upper station, a well-maintained trail leads to the main attractions, including the Five-Colour Pools. This allows visitors to conserve energy for exploring the most scenic parts of the park and enjoy a more relaxed downhill walk on the return journey.
For those who prefer to walk the entire route, it's a strenuous undertaking, often taking 2-3 hours to ascend. The trails are generally well-paved, but the thin air at high altitudes makes even moderate inclines challenging. The park also offers an electric tram service from the cable car station to the start of the main walking path, providing further convenience.
