Reviews Summary

Visitors are consistently impressed by the temple's magnificent 'Little Potala Palace' architecture and the stunning panoramic views from its upper levels. Many appreciate its historical significance as a representation of Tibetan Buddhism in China. However, the extensive uphill walking and numerous stairs can be quite challenging for some, particularly the elderly.

"Very interesting temple, the biggest in Chengde. We easily spent a few hours there. Parts of it were under restoration/scaffolding but it was still a good visit. There was a gallery with many versions of the Judge of Hell."

Siew Meng Tham

"Very cool place with tons of history. Especially if you don't want to make the trek to Tibet, this is a mini version built by Emperor Qinglong for the Dali Lama.
LOTS OF WALKING UP HILL. MAJORITY OF IT IS HILL AND STAIRS WHEN YOU GET TO EACH BUILDING."

Bill C

"Putuoshan China - visited those many spectacular Guanyin temples offering prayers by devotees locally and abroad.
Spectacular views from the hill.
A must to visit paying respects to Guanyin.

Hotels are available on the island.
Restaurants serving both meat/seafood or vegetarian.
There are a lot of local handiwork, soverniers about Putuoshan and the surrounding temples.

Don't miss the internal bus trip to the Guanyin shrine statue, need to walk around few hundred meters uphill, there are some rest spots along the way.
Spectacular view of Nanhai Guanyin !
There are many local and foreign devotees offering their prayers.

Don't miss the uphill walk towards "San Chai temple".
For elderly, it's advisable to go together with younger brothers or sisters as the uphill walk is steep and tiring.
Advisable to carry along water bottle to prevent dehydration.
Summer season - temperature can be hot, one might prefer Spring or Autumn.

This is my 3rd visit to Putuoshan in Sept 2023.

Local bus trips are available from Ningbo City terminal to Putuoshan and vice versa.

Visit during low season to avoid huge crowds."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Architectural Marvel: The 'Little Potala Palace'

Putuo Zongcheng Temple is renowned for its striking resemblance to the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet, earning it the nickname 'Little Potala Palace'. Built between 1767 and 1771 during the reign of Emperor Qianlong, it served as a place for Tibetan Buddhist ceremonies and gatherings. The temple is a prime example of the Qing Dynasty's architectural fusion, blending Tibetan Buddhist styles with Han Chinese aesthetics. Its sprawling layout covers a vast mountainside, featuring numerous halls, pagodas, and towers that create a visually stunning and imposing presence. Instagram

The design was intended to symbolize the emperor's patronage of Tibetan Buddhism and his desire to foster harmony among different ethnic groups within the empire. Visitors often remark on the sheer scale and intricate details of the construction, noting how it offers a glimpse into the grandeur of imperial China without the arduous journey to Tibet. InstagramReddit

Exploring the temple involves a significant amount of uphill walking and climbing stairs to reach different levels and structures. This physical aspect is a key part of the visitor experience, offering both a sense of pilgrimage and rewarding panoramic views from its higher vantage points. Reddit

A Journey Through History and Spirituality

Putuo Zongcheng Temple is one of the Eight Outer Temples of Chengde, each built to commemorate different ethnic groups and religions within the Qing Empire. This particular temple was constructed to honor the Dalai Lama and the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. It was a significant site for religious ceremonies and imperial audiences, particularly with Mongolian and Dzungarian chieftains who also followed Tibetan Buddhism. Reddit

The temple complex houses various halls dedicated to Buddhist deities and practices. One notable area is the gallery featuring numerous depictions of the 'Judge of Hell,' offering a unique insight into Buddhist cosmology and folklore. For devotees, it's a place to offer prayers and pay respects, with many local and foreign visitors participating in these rituals. Reddit

Beyond its religious significance, the temple is a testament to the Qing Dynasty's political and cultural strategies. By building these grand temples, emperors aimed to consolidate their rule and foster loyalty among diverse populations. The architectural style itself reflects this policy, integrating elements that would resonate with different cultural groups. Reddit

Navigating the Temple: Practicalities and Views

Visitors should be prepared for a substantial amount of walking and climbing. The temple is spread across a mountainside, with many steep paths and staircases leading to its various buildings and viewpoints. It's highly recommended to wear comfortable footwear and carry a water bottle, especially during warmer months, as the ascent can be tiring. Reddit

While the climb is demanding, the rewards are immense. The highest temple platforms offer spectacular panoramic views of Chengde city and the surrounding landscape. These vistas are a major highlight for many visitors and provide excellent photo opportunities. InstagramReddit

For those concerned about the physical exertion, consider visiting during the cooler seasons like spring or autumn. Weekday visits are generally less crowded than weekends, allowing for a more peaceful exploration. The temple can be explored independently, but hiring a guide can enhance the understanding of its history and significance, typically taking about two hours. Reddit
