What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are consistently impressed by the temple's magnificent 'Little Potala Palace' architecture and the stunning panoramic views from its upper levels. Many appreciate its historical significance as a representation of Tibetan Buddhism in China. However, the extensive uphill walking and numerous stairs can be quite challenging for some, particularly the elderly.
"Very interesting temple, the biggest in Chengde. We easily spent a few hours there. Parts of it were under restoration/scaffolding but it was still a good visit. There was a gallery with many versions of the Judge of Hell."

"Very cool place with tons of history. Especially if you don't want to make the trek to Tibet, this is a mini version built by Emperor Qinglong for the Dali Lama.
LOTS OF WALKING UP HILL. MAJORITY OF IT IS HILL AND STAIRS WHEN YOU GET TO EACH BUILDING."

"Putuoshan China - visited those many spectacular Guanyin temples offering prayers by devotees locally and abroad.
Spectacular views from the hill.
A must to visit paying respects to Guanyin.
Hotels are available on the island.
Restaurants serving both meat/seafood or vegetarian.
There are a lot of local handiwork, soverniers about Putuoshan and the surrounding temples.
Don't miss the internal bus trip to the Guanyin shrine statue, need to walk around few hundred meters uphill, there are some rest spots along the way.
Spectacular view of Nanhai Guanyin !
There are many local and foreign devotees offering their prayers.
Don't miss the uphill walk towards "San Chai temple".
For elderly, it's advisable to go together with younger brothers or sisters as the uphill walk is steep and tiring.
Advisable to carry along water bottle to prevent dehydration.
Summer season - temperature can be hot, one might prefer Spring or Autumn.
This is my 3rd visit to Putuoshan in Sept 2023.
Local bus trips are available from Ningbo City terminal to Putuoshan and vice versa.
Visit during low season to avoid huge crowds."
