On March 29, 1911, the Tongmenghui led by Sun Yat-sen failed in an armed uprising in Guangzhou to overthrow the Qing government, and more than 100 core members died. Pan Dawei, a member of the Tongmenghui, risked his life to collect the remains of 72 martyrs and buried them in Huanghuagang.
In 1918, patriots and overseas Chinese donated money to build this martyrs' cemetery in memory of the martyrs who died in the uprising. The top of the hill is the 72 martyrs' mausoleum, which is built with granite into a square tomb base. The upper part is built with 72 rectangular stones, which are stacked into a pyramid-shaped archway. On the top stands a statue of the Statue of Liberty holding a torch, which is unique and spectacular.
The entire cemetery covers an area of about 30,000 square meters. The park is full of evergreen pines and cypresses and lush flowers. The name "Huanghuagang" comes from "yellow flowers","
