Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Zili Village for its unique blend of Chinese and Western architecture and its historical significance as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The iconic views from Mingshi Lou and the authentic feel are frequently highlighted. Some visitors note the heat and the limited number of accessible towers.

"A rather unique place combining Chinese and Western architecture in the 1920s. If you wonder what square houses would look like, this is a good example. People actually live on the other houses, and they've modernized it for their use. There's only three diaolous open, and if you follow the recommended route, then the first diaolou's (Mingshi Lou) rooftop is the place where the main picture of Zili Village is taken (I think)

I paid 180rmb to access the three main villages of Kaiping Diaolou : Zili Village, Li Garden and Majianglong."

"Absolutely wonderful tour for the Diaolou clusters. There are quite a number of them, well kept and also open for touring inside. The scenery is fantastic with the rice paddies especially. The experience felt a lot more authentic here than at the Chikan ancient town. If you want to see most of the buildings I suggest 1.5 hours, as one hour would be slightly rushed. Of all the buildings the Mingshi Lou offers the nicest aerial views and it is worth climbing to the rooftop there. I got a ticket deal with entrance tickets to this village, Liyuan and Ma Jiang Long for 180 Yuan."

Helen Yu (Chestnut Journal)

"Restored village in Hoi Ping. It was really hot when we visited. Take an umbrella.
Many culturally significant buildings depicting architecture of a bygone era.
10RMB Parking, 78RMB basic entry. Clean amenities at entrance."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Unique Architecture of Diaolou

The Diaolou are the defining feature of Zili Village and the wider Kaiping region. These multi-story fortified towers, built primarily in the early 20th century, are a remarkable fusion of Chinese and Western architectural styles. Many were constructed by overseas Chinese who returned from abroad, bringing back influences from their travels in Europe and North America. This resulted in structures that often feature elements like Romanesque arches, Baroque decorations, and Renaissance facades, all integrated with traditional Chinese building techniques. Instagram+1

The primary purpose of the Diaolou was defense against bandits and local unrest, as well as providing a secure residence for families. Their robust construction, featuring thick concrete or rammed earth walls, iron-plated doors, and strategically placed windows for observation and defense, made them formidable structures. The variety in design is astounding, with each tower reflecting the owner's wealth, taste, and the specific influences they encountered overseas. Instagram

Exploring Zili Village allows you to witness this architectural marvel firsthand. You can see how these towers stand tall amidst the rural landscape, often surrounded by rice paddies, creating a picturesque and historically significant scene. The blend of styles is not just aesthetic; it tells a story of migration, cultural exchange, and the unique history of the Guangdong region. Instagram+1

A Glimpse into the Lives of Overseas Chinese

Zili Village, like other Kaiping Diaolou villages, is deeply connected to the history of overseas Chinese. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many people from this region emigrated to Southeast Asia, North America, and Europe in search of economic opportunities. These emigrants, often referred to as 'Huagong' (overseas laborers), played a significant role in building infrastructure in their adopted countries. Instagram+1

Upon their return to their hometowns, these successful emigrants invested their earnings in constructing the impressive Diaolou towers. These structures served not only as a symbol of their newfound wealth and status but also as a safe haven for their families back home. The towers provided protection from the dangers of the time, such as banditry and floods, while also showcasing the modern architectural styles they had encountered abroad. InstagramReddit

Visiting Zili Village offers a tangible connection to this era of migration and cultural exchange. You can see how these returning individuals shaped their local landscape with their experiences and resources, creating a unique heritage that is now recognized by UNESCO. The village is a living testament to the resilience, ambition, and the enduring ties between overseas Chinese and their ancestral homes. Instagram
