Reviews Summary

Pingyao Ancient City is widely praised as a remarkably well-preserved historical gem, offering an immersive journey into China's past, particularly its banking history. Visitors love the authentic atmosphere, the impressive city walls, and the chance to step back in time. Some find it a bit commercialized, and the unique, sometimes strong, smells of the ancient city can be a point of note for some.

"You could 'see' the livelihood of the ancient Chinese people with the historical-value architectural building designs and functions. There are Magistrate court with policemen which stayed at the same compound together with punishment open space, bank with underground vault, an escort organisation (mostly were Kung Fu masters) to protect the treasures while transporting to/from other cities which is similar to the present day of special forces... and many more. To explore within and outside of the ancient city, it's recommended to stay 1 night. Otherwise, just utilise 1 full day to explore within the ancient city if you wish to just see the building structures 😊"

"In Shanxi Province lies Pingyao, the best-preserved walled city in China. Since 1370, the 6.4-kilometer-long and 12-meter-high city wall has protected Pingyao from external threats, making it a thriving trading center during the Ming and Qing dynasties. This led to the establishment of the first banks, and the city's rise to become the financial headquarters of the Qing dynasty. The wall is open to tourists, so don't miss a walk along it to see Pingyao from a different perspective."

"I didn’t regret making a day trip to this ancient city, even though it started really early and felt a bit rushed and tiring. The exhaustion was made worse by the sudden shift in weather, it turned unexpectedly sunny and hot. Honestly, it’s worth staying at least one night here. The city wall gave off a stronger sense of antiquity than Xi’an’s, though both have their own unique charm. One curious note is that every area I visited had a distinct, indescribable smell. It wasn’t like the musty scent of old UK castles or mansions I’ve been to before. I jokingly told my friend, maybe it’s the smell of death, centuries of it lingering in the air. It is a must come for once."
