What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are captivated by the majestic beauty of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, particularly the stunning Glacier Park and the vibrant Blue Moon Valley. However, the extreme altitude poses a significant challenge, with many recommending oxygen canisters and warm clothing. The experience is well-organized but can feel commercialized with crowds and queues.
"Yulong Snow Mountain, also known as Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, is a striking natural landmark near Lijiang. I visited as part of a day trip and found the experience memorable, though there are a few things worth keeping in mind.
The mountain is impressive from a distance, especially on a clear day when the snow-covered peaks are visible above the clouds. Getting up to the Glacier Park (around 4,500 meters) requires taking a cable car. The ride itself is smooth, and the views become increasingly dramatic as you ascend. However, the altitude is no joke — several people around me, including myself, felt lightheaded or short of breath even after just a few steps. Bringing an oxygen canister is highly recommended, especially if you’re not used to high elevations.
At the top, the snow and scenery are beautiful but expect large crowds and limited time, as staff often move people along quickly. Paths are mostly wooden walkways with railings, but they can get slippery. Dress warmly, even in summer — temperatures were close to freezing when I visited in June.
Back at the lower elevations, Blue Moon Valley was a nice surprise. The turquoise-colored water is unusually vivid and makes for a peaceful walk, although parts of the area feel a bit curated for tourists.
The site overall is well-maintained, but also heavily commercialized. Long queues, ticket checks, and photo stations are part of the experience. Still, if you’re in the Lijiang area and interested in high-altitude landscapes, it’s worth considering.
Just be prepared: the beauty of the place is real, but so is the altitude and the tourism infrastructure built around it."

"Unfortunately, when I visited it was rainy and cloudy, but I was still lucky to visit the highest peak that the cable car could reach and from there I could climb to the highest peak allowed, luckily the weather was better then.
But note that it is necessary to prepare an oxygen tank so as not to be affected by altitude shock"

"The primeval forest is very beautiful, with a vision from the grass and high mountains. Areas with green moss and very mysterious. The schedule can take 1 day and should prepare a cold jacket."

Navigating the Altitude
To mitigate the effects, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and avoid strenuous activity immediately upon arrival. Taking it easy for the first hour at the higher elevation can make a significant difference. Some visitors also find that avoiding alcohol and heavy meals before and during their visit helps.
While the views are spectacular, remember that the thin air can limit your ability to explore extensively. Listen to your body and don't push yourself too hard. The experience is about appreciating the majestic scenery from a safe and comfortable vantage point.
The Glacier Park Experience
At the summit, wooden walkways with railings guide visitors through the snowy landscape. While beautiful, these paths can be slippery, so sturdy footwear is essential. The sheer scale of the mountains and the crisp, cold air create an awe-inspiring atmosphere. Be prepared for crowds, as this is a major draw for tourists.
Even on a clear day, the temperature at the top can be close to freezing, so warm clothing is non-negotiable. Many visitors are struck by the raw, natural beauty, but also by the commercial aspects, including photo stations and souvenir shops. Despite the crowds and the altitude, the panoramic vistas make the journey worthwhile for many.

While the Blue Moon Valley feels more curated for tourists, its unique color and tranquil atmosphere make it a worthwhile stop. It provides a gentler, more accessible experience for those who may find the high altitude of the Glacier Park challenging.
