What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Old Summer Palace for its vast, tranquil parkland, serene lakes, and picturesque willow-lined canals, offering a peaceful escape. While the historical ruins are poignant, many find the natural beauty and the opportunity for leisurely walks or boat rides to be the main draw. Some note that it's more of a park than a traditional palace complex.
"The older summer palace is so huge that we only managed to completed a small area in order to complete the rest of our itinerary for the day. The ruins are magnificent although much has crumpled to ground."

"Big park! Lots of historical ruins. Would be great if you have a guide to explain its significance. Not easy to get around with kids as it’s impossible to cover everything in a day. To save your legs, you could take a boat ride. There was quite a queue for the boat ride, however I came on a weekend so that is to be expected. If you only have limited time and have to choose between this and summer palace I would choose summer place anytime."

"Ruins of history with limited things to see, but may take it as a park for stroll."

Consider a polarizing filter to enhance the colors of the water and sky.

A Tale of Two Summer Palaces
In contrast, the New Summer Palace, Yiheyuan, is a more intact and grander complex, featuring magnificent architecture, the famous Kunming Lake, and the Longevity Hill. It's often more crowded due to its well-preserved structures and iconic sights. Many visitors find the New Summer Palace more visually stunning in terms of architecture, while the Old Summer Palace offers a more peaceful, expansive natural setting with a deeper historical resonance.
Choosing between them depends on your interests. If you prefer vast, tranquil gardens and a contemplative historical experience, Yuanmingyuan is ideal. If you seek grand imperial architecture and iconic landmarks, Yiheyuan might be your preference. Some travelers even try to visit both if time permits, but be aware they are distinct experiences.
The Poignant History of Yuanmingyuan
Tragically, Yuanmingyuan was largely destroyed by Anglo-French forces in 1860 during the Second Opium War. The ruins that remain today, particularly the European-style structures, serve as a stark and moving reminder of this historical devastation and a symbol of cultural loss. Visitors often feel a sense of melancholy mixed with awe when exploring these remnants, contemplating the grandeur that once was.
Despite its destruction, the park itself was rebuilt and remains a significant historical site and a beloved public space in Beijing. It offers a unique opportunity to connect with a crucial, albeit somber, chapter of Chinese history while enjoying its natural beauty.
Navigating the Expansive Park
Getting around can involve a lot of walking, so comfortable footwear is a must. For those who prefer not to walk the entire distance, boat rentals are available on the lakes, offering a relaxing way to see different parts of the park. Bicycles can also be rented, providing a faster way to cover ground. Consider renting an electric cart if you have mobility issues or want to cover more area efficiently.
Many visitors recommend getting a map upon entry to help orient yourself and plan your route. Prioritize the areas that interest you most, whether it's the historical ruins or the serene natural landscapes.
