An Iranian beach has turned bright red after heavy rainfall poured over Hormoz Island. A high concentration of iron oxide in the soil gives the Iranian mountain its bright red colour, which has stained the rainwater to appear like blood.

Reviews Summary

Visitors are captivated by the unique, vibrant crimson landscape of Panjin Red Beach, a testament to the Suaeda salsa plant's autumn transformation. The area's rich biodiversity, including rare birds like red-crowned cranes, adds significant appeal. However, the limited accessibility to only a small section and potential for large crowds during peak times are noted drawbacks.

"The Red Beach is located in the biggest wetland and reed marsh in the world. Actually, hosts the most completed ecosystem that can be found: the nature reserve has become home to more than 260 kinds of birds and 399 kinds of wild animals. You can find the endangered Crown Cranes and Black Beaked Gulls there, which is why the famous beach is even called “home of the cranes.”

To keep the beautiful nature and its inhabitants safe, the area was granted state-level protection back in 1988. Even though most of the Red Beach is closed to the public, there still is a small section that works as a tourist attraction. We can assure you that the photos below are not an example of infrared photography, it’s just one of those places that are hard to believe really exist!"

"Red Beach (simplified Chinese: 红海滩; traditional Chinese: 紅海灘; pinyin: Hóng hǎitān), located in Dawa County, Panjin, Liaoning, China, is famous for its landscape featuring the red plant of Suaeda salsa (Chinese: 碱蓬草) of the family Chenopodiaceae.[citation needed] It is based in the biggest wetland and reed marsh in the world. The landscape is composed of shallow seas and tide-lands. The Sueda is one of the few species of plant that can live in highly alkaline soil. Its growth cycle starts in April when it is colored light red, while the color of the mature species is deep red. Panjin Shuangtaizi River mouth state-level nature protection area (盘锦双台子河口自然保护区) preserves a very large, ecologically intact wetland. More than 260 kinds of birds and 399 kinds of wild animals live in it. It was promoted to the state-level nature protection area in 1988 and has applied to join the International person and biosphere protectorate network. The largest reed marsh in Asia is also located here, attracting many tourists. The reeds are used to make paper. The red-crowned crane (Grus japonensis) also reproduces here and it is also the endangered black-mouth gull's largest breeding area."

"In the autumn, this is a great place to view a sea of red when Panjin Red Beach, designated an AAAA scenic spot, and the world’s largest and best-maintained wetland changes to a crimson colour. It is the seepweed (aka seablite) plant which turns a crimson red during its autumn maturing phase. While maturing it changes from a green to goldish and then the crimson red. During this period it is referred to as the “red carpet beach.”

There is a walkway built over a portion of the flat marshlands, enabling sightseers to get great breathtaking views miles of the 51 square miles of coastal wetlands. These coastal waters are also home to 260 varieties of birds and 400 species of wildlife. However4 during our golden week visit, we saw mostly thousands and thousands of sightseers.

Red Beach Scenic Area has three distinct points of interest, being, Red Beach’s 618-metre walkway over the wetlands, Reed Sea Crane-watching corridor which stretches about 130 km along the banks of Liaohe River and the shores of Bohai Bay, and Moon Bay Wetland Park.

To get to Panjin City from Guangzhou, we took a three hour and forty minute flight with from GZ to Shenyang, and then took the train to Panjin City. It was about a two-hour train ride."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Phenomenon of the Red Beach

Panjin Red Beach, located in Liaoning Province, China, is a natural wonder renowned for its striking crimson landscape. This isn't sand, but rather a vast expanse covered by the Suaeda salsa plant. This unique plant thrives in the highly alkaline and saline soil of the Liaohe River Delta, an environment where few other species can survive. Its growth cycle begins in April, initially a light red, and by autumn, it matures into a deep, vibrant crimson, earning it the nickname 'red carpet beach.' InstagramReddit+1

The transformation is a breathtaking spectacle, drawing visitors from around the globe. The best time to witness this full crimson glory is typically in September and October. During this period, the entire wetland appears to be ablaze with red, creating a surreal and unforgettable visual experience. While the plant's color changes throughout its cycle, the autumn peak is what makes Panjin Red Beach world-famous. Instagram

It's important to remember that the Red Beach is part of a larger, ecologically significant wetland. To preserve this delicate environment and its inhabitants, only a limited section is accessible to tourists. This conservation effort ensures that the unique flora and fauna can continue to thrive for generations to come. Reddit

Biodiversity Hotspot: Home of the Cranes

Beyond its stunning visual appeal, Panjin Red Beach is a critical ecological zone and a vital habitat for a diverse array of wildlife. The surrounding wetlands, including the Panjin Shuangtaizi River mouth state-level nature protection area, are home to an astonishing number of species. Over 260 kinds of birds and 399 kinds of wild animals find refuge and sustenance here, making it one of the most biodiverse regions in China. Reddit

The area is particularly famous as a sanctuary for endangered species. It is a crucial breeding ground for the red-crowned crane (Grus japonensis), a majestic bird often associated with longevity and good fortune in Chinese culture. Additionally, it serves as the largest breeding area for the black-beaked gull, another species that benefits from the protected environment. Visitors may also spot other migratory birds and various forms of wildlife, adding another layer of wonder to the visit. InstagramReddit

The protection of this wetland is paramount. Designated as a state-level nature protection area in 1988, it plays a significant role in regional and international conservation efforts. The presence of these rare and endangered species underscores the importance of responsible tourism and adherence to conservation guidelines when visiting the accessible parts of the Red Beach. Reddit

Navigating the Scenic Area

Visiting Panjin Red Beach involves navigating a carefully managed scenic area designed to balance tourism with conservation. The primary tourist access point features a 618-meter walkway that extends over the wetlands. This elevated path allows visitors to immerse themselves in the landscape without disturbing the sensitive ecosystem underfoot. Reddit

This walkway provides excellent vantage points for photography and observing the vast expanse of red Suaeda salsa. It's designed to offer breathtaking views stretching for miles across the coastal wetlands. While this is the main attraction for visitors, the broader area also includes the Reed Sea Crane-watching corridor and Moon Bay Wetland Park, offering further opportunities to appreciate the natural beauty. Reddit

It's crucial for visitors to stay on the designated paths and walkways. The surrounding marshland is a fragile habitat, and straying from marked routes can cause irreparable damage. Respecting these boundaries ensures the continued health of the ecosystem and the well-being of its wildlife inhabitants. Reddit
