The challenging hikes and the option to explore beyond the main wall to Yansai Lake and the monastery are frequently praised. Some find the steepness of the wall sections demanding, and availability of services like food can be seasonal.
"The best part of the Great Wall! Been to Mutianyu, Badaling, Mingshui, and Dajingmen Great Wall. This is so far the best! Not so crowded, a bit challenging but you do have a choice to take the part on the side instead.
Amazing views, and you can hike as far as you can or as short as you want! I do recommend you to hike pass the temple on the top and go see the lake of Yansai(燕塞湖). We hiked there and saw two little pagoda in the distance. Did not hike to the pagoda as we had a tight schedule."

"Jiaoshan Great Wall is the first section of the Great Wall of China that was built on a mountain, dating back to the Ming dynasty.
Nowadays, there are cable cars that take visitors to the top of the mountain.
Shops selling drinks and souvenirs are located at the entrance and along the way up."

"For starters the wall seems to be a little outside the city, but is in fact quite close. By car it is only a few minutes from the city center or evan walking dictance if necessary. Finding a car in the city to take us there was actually harder than finding a car back. After we left (more than two hours after the closing) there were still a couple of taxis waiting outside.
At the entrance you need to pay a small fee, but it is only a couple of Euros. Inside there is a chairlift/ropeway which I think costs extra, but wasn't running in late Dezember. But we were exited to do the walking so we didn't mind.
The walk itself has different stages. The first one is on the wall, the second is a hinking trail to an old monastry, and the third is following the hiking trail - I think, but I don't know - to a lake. We didn't make the third stage since it was getting late and dark.
Walking on the wall starts simple. It is only a small rise and anyone can get up and walk around the Chinese wall to take some great pictures. But very soon walking gets climbing. It is really steep and takes effort to get up. In case you have someone in your company who isn't that good on his feet, you may want to start on the wall, but turn around a take the ropeway up. Another possibility is to take the hiking trail. It it lead right beside the wall and isn't as steep as the wall. We took the trail on our way back, since we did not want to climb the wall at dark.
After you reached the top either by walking the wall/trail or by taking the ropeway, the walk on the wall is finished and you need to take the hinking trail. Of coures the wall does not stop right on mountain top, but the restoration did. So the wall that continues, is how the wall would look like today, which is of course damaged and not suitable for walking.
At this point you need to take the hiking trail which is very comfortable and probably not a problem for anyone. We took the trail until the monastry which was unfortunately closed. Nearby anyway there was a great spot to view around the area. From this point we could see the lake to which we think the trail was heading, but since it was pretty late and we didn't know for sure, we turned around.
If you only want visit the wall your visit is probably taking about two to three hours. Walking up and back to the monestry took us a little over four hours.
In late Dezember there was noone selling food or drinks, this may be different at other times. Anyway you should make sure to have a bottle of water for the hike and maybe some snacks.
Close to the entrance there is a public toilet and there is evan a second about half way to the monastry, nearby the ropeway topside.
To sum up: I loved the day we spent there. It was magnificent walking on the Chinese wall and seeing the ocean in the distance. It wasn't as crowded as Badailing (a place near Beijing to see the wall) and not expensive at all. I'd recommend this place to those who are intressted in seeing the wall and to those who want to spent a little time outside the city."
