Reviews Summary

Bezeklik Caves offer a glimpse into ancient Silk Road artistry with Buddhist and Manichaean murals, set against a dramatic landscape. While many murals are damaged or removed, the historical significance and unique setting are appreciated. Some visitors find it expensive for the limited open caves and the need for imagination.

"Ancient buddhist grottoes carved into a cliff face with wall murals in various states of preservation, dating from the 7th-13th centuries. 5 caves are open to the public at present. The “thousand buddhas” epithet actually refers to the practice of painting multiple images of the Buddha on the cave ceilings, and so isn’t a literal description. The current state of the caves requires visitors to use much imagination, with the murals having suffered damage from centuries of neglect and deliberate destruction. Notable is the absence of the statuary that once decorated the caves, many of which were carted off by European explorers in the late-19th and early-20th centuries (notably the unfortunately-named Albert von Le Coq). There are plans to open up the ruins of the monastery below to visitors, which might make for a more interesting experience in the near future."

"Cultural Buddha site from 6-7 BC. Some areas had been enlarged until 12 Century. Larger parts of the paintings had been stolen and sold to European Museums. Ideal visiting time in the morning or late afternoon."

Andreas Wethli

"Expensive for the few open caves you're allowed to see. No pictures allowed inside the caves. Most of the paintings inside the caves are damaged or destroyed so you're seeing mostly ruins. Great views of the surrounding mountains but you don't need to visit here to see them. This tourist trap is avoidable."

The Art and Its Fate

The Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves are renowned for their ancient murals, primarily depicting Buddhist themes but also featuring rare Manichaean art. These artworks offer a glimpse into the religious and cultural landscape of the Silk Road during their active period, from the 5th to the 14th centuries. The vibrant colors and intricate details, even in their current state, speak to the skill of the ancient artists. Instagram+1

Unfortunately, the caves have suffered significant damage over centuries. Many murals have faded due to neglect and environmental factors, while others were deliberately destroyed. A substantial portion of the caves' treasures, including statues and significant mural fragments, were removed by foreign explorers in the early 20th century and are now housed in museums abroad. This historical context is crucial for understanding the present condition of the site. Reddit

While only a few caves are open to the public, the remaining art provides a powerful testament to the region's past. Visitors are encouraged to use their imagination to reconstruct the original splendor, appreciating the historical and artistic value that remains. Reddit

Navigating the Turpan Heat

The Turpan Basin is known for its extreme temperatures, and the Bezeklik Caves are no exception. Visiting during the hottest parts of the day can be uncomfortable and even dangerous. Travelers frequently mention the intense heat, advising others to plan their visit accordingly. Reddit

To make your visit more enjoyable, it's highly recommended to go in the early morning or late afternoon. This not only helps you avoid the peak heat but also provides softer, more atmospheric lighting for viewing the murals. Carrying plenty of water and wearing sun protection are essential precautions for any visit to this arid region. Reddit

Consider the time of year as well. Spring and autumn generally offer more pleasant temperatures for exploring outdoor attractions like the Bezeklik Caves and the surrounding Flaming Mountains. Instagram
