Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Wanghailou Catholic Church architecturally stunning, especially its Gothic design and illuminated facade at night. However, many note that interior access is often restricted, leading to disappointment for those hoping to explore inside. Despite this, its historical significance and unique appearance make it a noteworthy landmark in Tianjin.
"This is where I grew up!
The Church formerly known as the Shengtang of Our Lady, is located on the north side of the west end of Shizilin Street in Hebei District, Tianjin, diagonally facing the Shizilin Bridge. It is named after its former site, Wanghai Tower. The Wanghai Tower Church was built at the end of the eighth year of the Qing Dynasty's Tongzhi reign (1869), with a European Gothic architectural style. It was the first church built after the introduction of Catholicism to Tianjin. Covering an area of 3000 square meters.
The Wanghai Tower Church was burned down twice during the anti foreign religious struggle in the ninth year of the Qing Dynasty's Tongzhi reign (1870) and the Boxer Rebellion in the 26th year of the Qing Dynasty's Guangxu reign (1900). It is a famous location in modern Chinese history where the "Tianjin Protestant Case" occurred. In the thirtieth year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1904), it was rebuilt. In 1976, it was damaged in an earthquake. In 1983, it was repaired. There are three flat topped towers on the upright side of the building, forming a "mountain" shape and featuring a Gothic architectural style."
