Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Huaqing Palace for its scenic beauty, historical significance, and the captivating Tang Dynasty Show. The hot springs add a unique element, and its proximity to the Terracotta Army makes it a convenient addition to any Xi'an itinerary. Some find the hot spring experience pricey and advise against the food options within the palace.

"Hot spring for the Tang emperor and empress, nice site to visit with history. Location is very scenic and hot spring water is at 42C constant temperature. It is nice to bundle the visit with terracotta worrier, both sites are close to one another. You can experience the hot spring, but at a very steep price!!!"

David Chin

"What a wonderful garden! Although it was extremely hot and humid, the beautiful scenery I was able to witness made everything worth it!"

Kyujin Kim

"First of all, this place is easily accessible by bus (from Xian train station). Air here is magnificent as compared to the city areas. Great views and packed with history. Many guides are around and will come up to you constantly trying to sell their service (best way to avoid the constant haggling if you does not want a guide is to just say you've been there before). Beautiful architectures on the inside and the place is big for exploring. A spring water fountain is located inside for tourists to try out the water (washing hands and faces only). If you are game enough or have enough time, Li Shan (Li Mountain) is right behind and entry to the mountain is covered with the ticket you bought to enter the hot spring. Cable car accesses are available for going up and down the mountain. However, climbing up yourself is recommended as there are many fun things along the way (like horse riding the last mile up the mountains).
Overall, a really nice place to stay for the whole day."

The History of Huaqing Palace

Huaqing Palace, also known as Huaqing Hot Springs, boasts a rich history dating back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD). It was a favored imperial retreat, renowned for its natural hot springs. The palace complex served as a summer resort for emperors and their consorts, most famously Emperor Xuanzong and his beloved consort Yang Guifei. The site witnessed significant historical events, including the Xi'an Incident in 1936, where Chiang Kai-shek was detained, leading to the formation of the Second United Front against Japan. Reddit

Today, Huaqing Palace is a meticulously preserved historical site and a popular tourist destination. Visitors can explore the remnants of the imperial bathing pools, admire the elegant architecture, and wander through the beautiful gardens that have been restored to their former glory. The site offers a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyle of the Tang Dynasty elite and the pivotal moments in modern Chinese history. Reddit

The Tang Dynasty Show, a grand outdoor performance, vividly recreates the romance and grandeur of that era, making the history come alive for visitors. The adjacent Li Shan mountain adds another layer of historical and natural appeal, with ancient beacon towers and temples dotting its slopes.

Experiencing the Hot Springs

The allure of Huaqing Palace is deeply tied to its natural hot springs, which have been celebrated for centuries. The water, rich in minerals, is believed to have therapeutic properties. While the original imperial bathing facilities are preserved as historical artifacts, the site offers visitors a chance to connect with this ancient tradition. You can see the layout of the historical pools where emperors and empresses once relaxed and rejuvenated. Reddit

There are designated areas within the complex where visitors can dip their hands or feet into the warm spring water, offering a small taste of the experience. For those seeking a more immersive hot spring experience, there are modern facilities nearby that utilize the same natural springs, though these are typically separate from the historical palace grounds and may incur additional costs. Reddit

The constant temperature of the spring water, around 42°C, is a testament to the geothermal activity in the region. This natural wonder has drawn visitors for millennia, making it a cornerstone of Huaqing Palace's enduring appeal.

The Tang Dynasty Show

A highlight for many visitors to Huaqing Palace is the spectacular Tang Dynasty Show. This large-scale outdoor performance is a breathtaking spectacle that brings the history and romance of the Tang Dynasty to life. Held in an amphitheater with the backdrop of the mountains, the show features elaborate costumes, skilled dancers, and impressive choreography. Reddit

The show typically depicts the legendary love story of Emperor Xuanzong and Yang Guifei, showcasing the opulence and cultural achievements of the era. It's a visually stunning production that offers a captivating glimpse into the golden age of Chinese history. Reddit

It's important to note that the Tang Dynasty Show is usually a separate ticketed event and takes place in the evening. Checking the schedule and booking tickets in advance is highly recommended, as it's a very popular attraction and can sell out.
