Reviews Summary

Travelers rave about the Camino Real Cabrera-Jordán, particularly the Barichara to Guane hike, for its stunning scenery and historical significance. The well-preserved stone path and the charming destination of Guane are major highlights. Some visitors note the challenging, uneven terrain requires good footwear and caution.

"Nice walk of roughly 6.5 km. Mostly downhill over slabs of stones to reach the nice colonial hamlet of Guane. You can buy water/ juices from a store halfway or in Guane itself, there is a regularly bus service between Guane and Barichara or take a tuktuk.
Don't forget to wear a hat!!"

"Just an absolutely beautiful walk. The full trail is a historic stone-paved route originally built by the indigenous Guane people and later reconstructed by the Spanish and a German engineer, Geo von Lengerke, about 150 years ago. We could see why it is famous given the scenic landscapes, colonial towns, and cultural heritage. However, like many, we completed the most popular section from Barichara to Guane hike, which is about 6–9 km, mostly downhill, and takes about 2 hours. This stretch offers cobblestone paths, whitewashed houses, and beautiful canyon views. However the full Camino Real extends from Cabrera to Los Santos, covering around 42.5 km and passing through several towns: Cabrera, Barichara, Guane, Villanueva, Jordán, and Los Santos. It was a very lovely experience."

"Beautiful hike-2+ hour hike. I’m not a big hiker, but it was absolutely worth it. The trail offered lovely views, with much of it going downhill and often under the shade, making it a pleasant experience."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of the Camino Real

The Camino Real Cabrera-Jordán is more than just a hiking trail; it's a vital historical artery. Originally constructed by the indigenous Guane people, this route was later expanded and improved by Spanish colonizers. A significant reconstruction about 150 years ago was undertaken by a German engineer named Geo von Lengerke, who is credited with much of the stone paving that exists today, particularly on the popular Barichara to Guane segment. This historic path served as a crucial link for trade and communication between the various towns in the region, including Cabrera, Barichara, Guane, Villanueva, Jordán, and Los Santos. Walking this path offers a tangible connection to centuries of history and the ingenuity of the people who built it. Reddit

Navigating the Stone Path

The defining characteristic of the Camino Real, especially the Barichara to Guane section, is its stone-paved surface. These aren't small, uniform cobblestones; they are large, irregularly shaped rocks, often a foot in diameter. This makes for a challenging but rewarding trek. Hikers need to be constantly aware of their footing, selecting stable stones to step on. It's described by some as akin to 'rock climbing' in certain sections, even on flatter parts. This uneven terrain is precisely why sturdy hiking boots with ankle support are so highly recommended by virtually everyone who has walked it. Reddit

Connecting Barichara and Guane

The most frequented part of the Camino Real is the approximately 6.5 km stretch connecting the picturesque town of Barichara to the charming colonial hamlet of Guane. This segment is predominantly downhill, making it a more accessible hike for a wider range of visitors. The journey typically takes around two hours and offers a delightful experience with its scenic landscapes, whitewashed houses, and canyon views. Upon arrival in Guane, visitors can explore its tranquil streets, enjoy local refreshments, and then arrange for a tuktuk or bus to return to Barichara, completing a perfect day trip. Reddit
