Reviews Summary

Quebrada Las Gachas is widely praised as a unique and beautiful natural wonder, with visitors loving the 'natural jacuzzis' and refreshing waters. Some find it slightly overhyped, but most agree the scenic walk and the distinctiveness of the pools make it a worthwhile destination.

"Great natural place near to Guadalupe town. You have to take an alternative route before you enter to the town, and drive through it for about 5 minutes, then you park the car and you have to walk for about 30 minutes to arrive to the point. There is the place in a shallow river with a holes on the floor where you can see the water coming into that holes. Some of them are very deep but the most in not more than 1.60 mts proof. Water is clean and cold, but weather is usually hot."

"One of the best experiences in my life! this place is absolutely beautiful and fun. We stayed in a cabin near by Las Gachas booked in Airbnb. We arrived very early when nobody was there and it was the most peaceful experience. Swimming in the water holes are too much fun. At midday you’ll see a lot of vendors selling beer and traditional lunch specials. Be careful with the sun because it burns as hell. Make sure to bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Hoping to come here with more family any time soon!"

Diego Hernandez

"Wonderful spot. Unique place on earth. Beautiful colors and cool waters to soak in. The short hike to the river is not strenuous, but remember you are pretty high up, so us sea level people do have a bit of struggle due to altitude. Las Gachas is somewhat off the beaten track and has challenges to get there, but one you do, it is so amazing. Well worth the effort to get here."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Geology of Las Gachas

Quebrada Las Gachas is a marvel of natural erosion. Over centuries, the flowing water has sculpted the soft, reddish rock into a series of perfectly circular pools. These formations, often referred to as 'natural jacuzzis,' vary in depth, creating a unique landscape for visitors to explore. The distinctive reddish hue of the rock is a key characteristic that sets this place apart. InstagramReddit

The process is a testament to the power of water and time. As the river flows, it carries small abrasive particles that gradually carve out the depressions. The consistency of the flow and the composition of the rock contribute to the remarkably uniform circular shapes of the pools. It's a living geological exhibit, constantly shaped by the environment. Reddit

Visitors often marvel at the sheer number and variety of these pools, with estimates suggesting over a hundred. The shallow riverbed allows for easy exploration, and the pools offer a refreshing respite from the often hot weather in the region. InstagramReddit

Planning Your Visit: Beyond the Pools

While the natural pools are the main draw, the journey to Quebrada Las Gachas is part of the experience. The drive through Santander offers picturesque views, and the short hike to the river is a pleasant introduction to the natural beauty of the area. InstagramReddit

Upon arrival at the main pools, you might find local vendors offering refreshments and traditional Colombian lunch specials, especially during peak hours. This adds a local flavor to the visit, allowing you to sample regional cuisine while enjoying the scenery. InstagramReddit

For those seeking a more tranquil experience, venturing upstream from the main cluster of pools can lead to quieter, less-visited spots. This allows for a more personal connection with nature and a chance to discover hidden gems within the quebrada. Reddit
