What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise The Peak for its absolutely breathtaking 360-degree views of Providencia and the 'Sea of Seven Colors,' making the hike worthwhile for many. However, a significant point of contention is the aggressive push for mandatory guides and the associated high fees, which some perceive as a scam and an overcharge, detracting from an otherwise beautiful natural attraction.
"Absolutely worth the hike up here, amazing 360 degrees view of the whole island and the surrounding waters
Perfectly doable without a guide if you’re in good shape. There are some steep climbs near the top but nothing extreme.
Nobody bothered me at the trailhead to say a guide was mandatory like most reviews here said. Maybe I was lucky or it’s because I went early on a random Wednesday during low season, or they’re not doing that anymore. Either way it’s absolutely not mandatory to have one"

"The views are great — but forcing a guide one does not need is not! There's a group of locals who are trying to make a sketchy business out of this beautiful nature trail (forcing you to pay for a guide and overcharging profoundly, especially if you look like a foreigner). They are definitely not working for the government. This feels like a scam.
These people stand in the beginning of the trail, flashing their machetes and arguing that one MUST have a guide — and pay 60-70k COP per person. But why? Sure, there are some steep parts and rocks on the trail, but it's not difficult at all for a mediocre hiker. And it is impossible to get lost if you have any sense of direction.
We found the beginning of the trail from the end of the street which starts from the Iguana statue (Bottom House). Luckily, we entered during a moment when there were no guides around — yet we met one when going up. He was fiercely complaining about us not having a guide, but couldn't stop us as he was "guiding" another couple (who said to us they wouldn't have needed a guide).
Eventually, we hiked up and down on our own with no accidents. The views are amazing. But. They should establish a national park or something official and put a stop to the scam. We'd be happy to pay if we could somehow verify that the fee would go to the trail preservation at least partly."

"Beautiful walk and views but 70,000 peso cost per person is a complete rip off. Locals are very aggressive about need to pay and brag about how police 'fine' visitors not paying. Guide claims cost covers insurance, safety and 'repairs' of trail after the hurricane , but ignores fact there is already a hefty surcharge to visit the islands and post hurricane (2020) rebuilding of whole island generously aided by foreign governments.
A guide is not necessary for trail ...one hour walk on marked route...and a modest entry fee would cover costs and ensure many more tourists enjoy the trail without feeling exploited.
This ridiculous overcharge really damages the island image, and is in stark contrast to other activities on the island which are reasonably priced, such as 100,000 pesos for example you can do a full tour by boat of the island for a day and visit snorkeling spots. Shame on a few greedy people to threaten and abuse visitors."
