Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the stunning beauty of Catarata del Toro and the unique volcanic crater setting, often calling it one of Costa Rica's most beautiful waterfalls. The adjacent Blue Falls also receive high praise for their vibrant colors. While the hike down involves many steps, most find the views well worth the effort. Some note the parking lot could use improvement and that cash is preferred at the restaurant.

"If you are considering doing this waterfall with the Blue Falls on the same day (combo ticket), do this first and early in the morning (9 am is good). If you are only interested in the distant view of Catarata del Toro, there are a couple of viewpoints very close to the start of the trail (with a bench). If you want to go down, close to the base of the waterfall, expect a 1.5 hr roundtrip with 350-375 steps down and the same amount back up. The initial hike is on a gentle trail through the forest. The steps start after a gate. Watch your footing when there's rain around. Down at the base, expect decent spray when you get close and a tricky/muddy/slippery/rocky surface. There is a lookout just slightly above that area from where you can get pictures of the waterfall without spray on your lens. The hike back up can be very taxing on your quadriceps (especially with photography gear). At the top, get enough rest and refuel with some lunch at the restaurant (cash preferred) if you are exploring the Blue Falls next as those too, in total, have a lot of steps to negotiate. Restrooms available at the top/entrance. Don't need to buy tickets beforehand - I bought them upon arrival with card. Dedicated parking lot. For photography, 24-70 mm lens is good."

"Such a beautiful place to visit, super easy hike down and out. The paths are well maintained, there are waste bins along the way, ample places to picnic and relax. Parking lot could use a bulldozer for sure, but that's typical of CR. Bring water shoes for sure, and enjoy."

Sarah Mayne

"This one is a bit off the beaten track, which means less crowded than some other waterfalls. Came straight from SJO airport and detoured via the scenic route to here. The drive is not for the faint of heart, very steep gradients and hairpin bends, fortunately not much traffic. The walk down to the falls is steep, but the steps make it manageable for most. We got unlucky with the weather, heavy rain all the way, but even getting to our hotel drenched was worth it"
