Visitors praise Hitoy Cerere Biological Reserve for its truly untouched, virgin jungle experience, offering a rare glimpse into pristine Amazonian wilderness. The abundance of wildlife and the scenic waterfall trail are highlights. However, the challenging, slippery, and overgrown terrain requires significant preparedness, with a 4x4 vehicle and waterproof gear being essential for a comfortable visit.
"This national park is for you if you seek untouched virgin jungle.
A 4x4 is advisable. There is no real infrastructure, signs are close to non existent, which is not a problem as the walk to the waterfall along the river is easy to find. If you want to veer off, a gps navigation is recommended. Shoes to walk through water are essential. We did 8km in total.
The ranger at the entrance was extremely nice. We didn’t see a single human, but plenty of toucans, butterflies, lizards."

"Google states that Hitoy Cerene is temporarily closed, it is not. The park is open to the public. You also, like the Lonely Planet suggests, don’t need a 4X4 to get there. The road isn’t great, but driveable.
That being said: I would reconsider in going altogether. The park is unspoiled, but also a bit extreme. This is nothing like the more well known parks in Costa Rica.
Hitoy Cerene is not jungle light. It’s slippery, wet and paths are overgrown (the photos are not of the surroundings but of the path (or lack of)). Hikes have a tendency to end in nothing, like a ravine.
I would definitely go if you are an adventurous type. Bringing a guide is probably your best option. It saves you all the stupid mistakes I made, like bringing only jungle boots, and it might lead to an unforgettable experience."
