What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Playa Conchal is widely praised for its stunning natural beauty, unique shell-covered sands, and incredibly clear waters perfect for snorkeling. Visitors love the tranquil atmosphere compared to busier nearby beaches and the friendly local vendors. Some find the shell sand rough on the feet and note limited dining options directly on the beach.
"Amazing, breathtaking beach with snorkeling if it’s calm and high tide. You have to walk in from Playa Brasilito and the locals like a few Colones to “watch your ride”. I’m happy to put a smile on a face and spend time learning about life in Brasilito. Then you walk for about 10-12 minutes through a short pass and onto Playa Conchal. We went twice it was so nice."

"Such a lovely tranquil vibe. Not many people. Not too many tourists like Tamarindo. Blue waters that are great for snorkelling.
Great for a picknick or lunch at hotel Brasillito."

"This place is so amazing I debated whether to write an honest review, which would attract more people to come here, or lie and say it was awful, and help conserve it!
This wasn’t planned for me, I joined my relative already on vacation here at the W , such a beautiful location, built on a nature preserve, so pristine and well kept.
The beach is super clean, but the sand is a little rough, very pebbly and lots of crushed seashells, hence the name playa conchal (shell beach).
The water was super warm and amazing that I didn’t want to get out and eventually got sunburnt. The sun’s effect is strong here, make sure to prepare for that.
If you wish to buy souvenirs or book excursions or massages, there are lots of vendors that would love your business. Don’t make my mistake and be cashless, I had to make three trips back for more cash, the souvenirs were amazing, and decently priced.
If you are reading this, book now! There’s not even one negative thing I could think about this place. As a matter of fact, the Costa Rican hospitality is second to none, don’t miss out on the most friendly people on earth. PURA VIDA!"

The Unique Shell Sands of Playa Conchal
This unique geological feature is a major draw for visitors seeking something different from the usual sandy beaches. The way the light reflects off the shells creates a shimmering effect, particularly during sunrise and sunset. It’s a photographer’s dream, offering a stark contrast between the white shells and the vibrant blue of the Pacific Ocean. The sheer volume of shells is a testament to the rich marine life that once thrived in this area.
When exploring Playa Conchal, take a moment to appreciate the intricate patterns formed by the shells. You might even find larger, intact shells scattered amongst the smaller fragments. It’s a natural wonder that sets this Guanacaste beach apart from many others in Costa Rica. Remember to tread lightly and respect this delicate environment.
Snorkeling and Marine Life
To make the most of your snorkeling adventure, it's highly recommended to bring your own gear or rent some from local vendors. Goggles are essential for clear underwater viewing, and fins can help you navigate more easily. Even without specialized gear, the shallows often teem with small fish that are fascinating to watch. The warmth of the water also means you can spend extended periods exploring the underwater world without feeling cold.
Beyond the fish, the seabed itself is an interesting sight, with the shells creating a textured mosaic. While not a coral reef, the diverse underwater environment supports a healthy population of marine creatures. Keep an eye out for different species of reef fish, and enjoy the tranquil experience of floating in the clear Pacific waters.
Navigating Access and Amenities
Once on the beach, you'll find a stretch of vendors offering souvenirs, massages, and sometimes excursion bookings. While some vendors are embracing digital payments like Apple Pay, it's wise to have U.S. dollars in cash readily available, as many still prefer it. This will make your souvenir shopping and any spontaneous purchases much smoother.
Regarding amenities, Playa Conchal is more natural and less developed than some other tourist hotspots. There are no large resorts directly on the beach, contributing to its tranquil vibe. For dining, the nearby town of Brasilito offers local 'sodas' (small Costa Rican eateries) serving traditional dishes, providing an authentic culinary experience.
