Navigating Santa Teresa's Roads

Santa Teresa's roads are notoriously unpaved and dusty, making a 4x4 vehicle or ATV essential for getting around comfortably. Be prepared for potholes and a lot of dust, especially during the dry season. Many travelers recommend renting an ATV for easier navigation and to explore nearby areas like Montezuma Falls. Reddit

Embrace the Tourist Vibe

While beautiful, Santa Teresa has a distinctly tourist-centric feel, often compared to Bali or Puerto Escondido. You'll find many international eateries and shops, with some visitors noting a lack of local culture. Despite this, the stunning beaches and surf breaks remain a major draw. TikTokReddit

Soda Tiquicia, Santa Teresa, Costa Rica.

Reviews Summary

Santa Teresa offers stunning beaches and world-class sunsets, making it a paradise for surfers and beach lovers. However, visitors often note the challenging unpaved roads, significant dust, and a tourist-centric vibe with prices comparable to major cities. Some find the lack of pedestrian infrastructure and a perceived lack of local culture disappointing.

"Disappointed to see there’s not enough ticos in their native land, it’s sad to see the town dominated by Argentinians (absolutely love them and their shops). Good foods, definitely recommend the bakery, eat street, ani’s bowls, gaucha. Great beach for surfing, beautiful sunsets everyday, love the vibrant colors in the nature, the sky, the stars, the fresh fruits. Playa hermosa is worth the visit for the views, the water is a bit calmer for swimming. Fun roads for Atv."

Raquel Santana

"Don’t recommend.
The vibe is off, looks like Bali with not so friendly expats. Also you cannot safely walk as there’s no pedestrian and so many ATV and cars passing. Plus, it’s a bit dirty.
But the beaches are beautiful -like everywhere in Central America- so go somewhere else."

Audrée

"Not my favorite. The entire town smells terrible of trash. Everyone literally walks in the middle of the road while you are trying to maneuver potholes, motorcycles and ATVs. There is an insane amount of dust. All the leaves/plants/ cars are covered. Yes, beautiful beaches if you drive to them but the main ones are way too crowded. I highly recommend Manzanillo beach. I do not plan on returning. Also hit up Que Mae brewery if in town. It is WAY worth it!"
