Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the Punta Islita Macaw Sanctuary as a worthwhile trip for bird lovers and those interested in conservation. The opportunity to see scarlet macaws and learn about the sanctuary's efforts to restore their population is a major draw. While the drive can be challenging, most agree the experience and the cause are well worth the effort.
"Totally worth the trip to Islita for any true bird lover (we drove 3 hrs each way from Playa Flamingo to see them). This is a cause worth supporting and getting to see the birds was a treat.
But do remember, these are actually wild macaws that have been released locally, so they may or may not show up while you visit.
Also recommend emailing them in advance of your visit (weather & logistics) and making payments/ donations online."

"A very unique experience. Tour is better for older children, there is a presentation and then you can watch the birds feeding. We learned a lot about these beautiful birds and how they are trying to restore the population. I would recommend this tour if you have any interest in birds or wildlife."
Megan Kleckner
"Spectacular! I normally don’t like animal parks, but here the goal of keeping them captive is clear: increasing the population and slowly releasing them one by one.
The scarlet aras are actually wild, but some return to the complex and join the ones that are semi-wildered.
Very interesting explanations on the foundations efforts, the whole compound and obviously the macaws and their habitat.
DO NOT agree with the other reviews, in dry weather the road is accessible, we had no problem in our Toyota sedan."
