What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Savegre River rafting for its incredible adventure and the exceptional service provided by the operators. The 'El Chorro' section is highlighted for its thrilling Class V rapids, while the guides are commended for their expertise, safety consciousness, and engaging personalities. The stunning rainforest scenery and personalized attention from the staff make it a standout experience for many.
"Absolutely incredible experience! From the very first moment I reached out to this company via WhatsApp, Felipe (who is also the owner) was exceptional. His communication was clear, timely, and so helpful, making the booking process seamless. He suggested we do the “El Chorro” river, which includes class V rapids, even though it was our first time rafting. He assured us that we would enjoy it and that it would be an unforgettable experience—and he was absolutely right.
When we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by Colin, Felipe’s teenage son, who was the most amazing host. Colin immediately made us feel at home, offering tips and recommendations even before the tour began. His energy and friendliness set the perfect tone for the day.
Before hitting the water, Chris walked us through the safety rules and provided a thorough explanation to ensure we felt confident and secure. What stood out was how he also shared fascinating insights about the local plants, including their medicinal uses and benefits—something we truly appreciated as part of the experience.
Our captain, Anthony, was nothing short of incredible. With over 20 years of experience, his expertise was evident, yet his enthusiasm made it feel like it was his first week on the job. We have read online that in La Fortuna they have controlled streams and are more touristic, often with multiple people crammed into one boat. This only made us feel even more grateful that we had chosen this company, as we essentially had a private tour with just me, my wife, and this incredible captain and AN AMAZING SETTING!
A huge thank you also goes to Carolina, Felipe’s wife, who kindly allowed us to park our car inside their gate. We had just arrived from San José and still had all our luggage with us, so this gesture made us feel extremely safe and well cared for.
This was the best possible start to our honeymoon in Costa Rica. The personalised service, the warmth of the entire team, and the thrilling adventure made this an unforgettable experience. We’re so thankful for Felipe, Carolina, Colin, Chris, and Anthony for making our first day in Costa Rica absolutely magical. We hope the rest of our journey continues to be as special as this! Highly, highly recommend!"

"Felipe was a fantastic guide fly fishing for a 1/2 day trip today. Super friendly, knowledgeable, and all around just a good time. He put us on a ton of fish, and we even held up our end of the bargain and wrangled a few to the boat. Machaca and Pacific Grunt. Would recommend 10/10!"

🚇 🗺️ Getting There
Many Savegre River rafting tours offer convenient pick-up services from Manuel Antonio, typically including transportation to the river put-in point. Confirm this with your chosen operator when booking. The drive can take around 1-2 hours depending on the specific section of the river and traffic conditions.
Yes, it's possible to drive yourself if you have a rental car, but it's often recommended to use the provided transportation. Roads can be unpaved and challenging, especially after rain. Your tour operator can provide specific directions if you choose to self-drive.
From San Jose, you can take a bus or shuttle to Quepos or Manuel Antonio, and then arrange for a rafting tour with pick-up. Alternatively, some rafting companies might offer direct transfers from San Jose, though this is less common and usually more expensive.
The main put-in points depend on the section of the Savegre River you are rafting. For 'El Chorro,' the put-in is typically further upstream. Your tour operator will specify the exact meeting and put-in locations.
If you are driving yourself, a 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended, especially during the rainy season, as some access roads can be rough and muddy. However, most visitors opt for tour operator transport, which is usually a van or bus.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
Prices for Savegre River rafting typically range from $70 to $120 USD per person, depending on the tour operator, duration, and included amenities like meals and transportation. It's advisable to book in advance, especially for popular sections like 'El Chorro'.
Yes, booking in advance is highly recommended, particularly if you're aiming for specific dates or the 'El Chorro' section, which is very popular. This ensures availability and allows operators to plan logistics effectively.
Most tours include professional guides, safety equipment (helmet, life vest), raft, transportation to and from the river, and often a riverside lunch or snacks. Some may also include a visit to a spice farm or waterfall.
Generally, there are age restrictions, often around 10-12 years old for moderate sections and potentially higher for more intense rapids like Class V. Weight limits might also apply for safety reasons. Always check with your tour operator beforehand.
Cancellation policies vary by operator. Many require advance notice (e.g., 24-48 hours) for a full refund. Check the specific terms and conditions when you book, especially regarding weather-related cancellations.
🎫 🏞️ Onsite Experience
The 'El Chorro' section is known for its challenging Class V rapids, offering an exhilarating experience for thrill-seekers. It's a more intense and demanding rafting adventure compared to other sections of the Savegre River.
Wear quick-drying clothing like synthetic shorts and a t-shirt. Avoid cotton, as it stays wet and cold. Secure, closed-toe water shoes or old sneakers are essential. Many people wear swimwear under their rafting gear.
It's generally not recommended to bring personal electronics like phones or expensive cameras on the raft due to the risk of them getting wet or lost. Most operators offer professional photo services for an additional fee, or you can use a waterproof action camera secured to your gear.
The water temperature of the Savegre River is typically cool and refreshing, averaging around 70-75°F (21-24°C). While it can be bracing at first, the physical activity keeps you warm, and the wetsuits provided by some operators offer extra insulation.
The Savegre River flows through lush rainforests, offering opportunities to spot diverse wildlife. Keep an eye out for monkeys, sloths, iguanas, and a variety of tropical birds. Guides often point out interesting species along the way.
🍽️ 🍽️ Food & Dining

Yes, most tour operators are accommodating and can provide vegetarian or vegan meal options if you inform them in advance when making your reservation. It's always best to communicate any dietary restrictions when booking.
Expect hearty, local Costa Rican dishes. This often includes rice, beans, plantains, chicken or fish, and fresh salads. Snacks might include tropical fruits or energy bars.
Dining options directly at the put-in points are usually limited to what your tour operator provides. If you are self-driving, you might find local sodas (small, casual restaurants) in nearby towns like Quepos or Dominical, but it's best to plan for meals included in your tour.
Generally, you won't have opportunities to purchase additional drinks or snacks during the rafting trip itself, as you'll be on the river. Ensure you have any personal preferences met before you depart with your tour group.
📸 📸 Photography
While you can't typically bring your phone or camera onto the raft due to safety concerns, many operators offer professional photography services. They have dedicated photographers who capture action shots of your group navigating the rapids.
The cost for professional photo packages varies, but expect to pay anywhere from $30 to $70 USD for a digital download of your group's photos. Some operators might offer prints as well.
If you want to capture your own memories, use a waterproof action camera (like a GoPro) securely attached to your helmet or life vest. Ensure it's properly secured to avoid losing it in the water. Some guides might allow you to hand over a phone in a waterproof case for a quick shot during calmer sections, but this is not guaranteed.

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
When booking, always confirm the minimum age requirements, as these can vary. Look for tours that emphasize safety, provide thorough briefings, and have guides experienced with younger participants. Many family-friendly tours also include stops at scenic spots or opportunities to learn about the local environment, making it an educational and fun day out for everyone.
❤️ Couples & Honeymooners
Consider tours that might include a special riverside lunch or a stop at a scenic viewpoint. The combination of shared adventure, breathtaking natural beauty, and the expertise of your guides creates an unforgettable bonding experience. It's a perfect way to add an element of excitement and natural exploration to a romantic getaway in Costa Rica.
💰 Budget Travelers
Consider traveling during the shoulder seasons or booking slightly in advance to potentially secure better rates. While some tours might seem pricier, the comprehensive inclusions often make them more cost-effective than arranging separate transport and meals. Always check what's included in the price to avoid hidden fees and ensure you're getting the best deal for your Savegre River rafting adventure.
