What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors often praise the Maleku Indigenous Reserve for its educational value and authentic cultural immersion, highlighting the delicious traditional food and vibrant handicrafts. Some reviewers noted that certain demonstrations felt staged for tourists, and that the actual living quarters are not shown, but the overall sentiment leans towards a positive and enriching experience that supports indigenous heritage preservation.
"This visit was better than expected - we were positively surprised that it was not focused on souvenir-peddling but instead was educational. Jimmy and his family gave us a glimpse of Maleku traditions including their mythological beliefs, medicinal use of plants, ritual to communicate with their gods, and their food (the lunch of star aniseed leaf-wrapped tilapia was delicious!) We are grateful that while they live with modern amenities that they are dedicated to working with universities to document/ preserve the Maleku language, customs and way of life before it is lost. It’s a Costa Rican heritage worth preserving for future generations."

"The family is very nice, and you do get to know their history and learn about their past and a bit about their culture, but it's too touristy in the sense that you get to practice bow and arrow (ok, that's fun), make some artisanal work (so so) and watch a "show" or representation about a Maleku ceremony. That I found too forced, and the kids seamed upset to have to get along with it. Also, what you see is made up for welcoming tourists, you don't actually see where they live, but, as we were told, they live in pretty normal houses nowadays. I would have skipped this attraction if possible..."

"It's a beautiful place. I love seeing its culture. Its vibrantly colored craftsmanship is truly impressive. And hearing their stories is priceless."
